1987년 7월 1일 개관한 기당미술관은 국내 최초의 시립 미술관으로​​​​​​​제주가 고향인 재일교포사업가 기당(寄堂) 강구범에 의하여 건립되어 서귀포시에 기증되었다고 하네요

미술관 내부의 천장이 농촌의 눌을 형상화하여 멋스럽고 동선도 나선형으로 이루어져 전통가옥을 떠오르게 하더라구요 자연광도 들어와 자연스럽고 따뜻한 공간 구조를 보여주고 있어요

기당미술관은 기증자의 호를 딴 이름으로 우리나라 공립미술관으로서는 최초라고 할 수 있는 곳. 다변하는 현대미술의 흐름을 지역에 소개하여 문화활동 기회를 마련하기 위해 국내외 현대작가들의 작품을 수집하고 전시하고 있다. 입장료도 성인이 천원 정도로 부담없이 다녀올 수 있는 곳이다. 초대 관장인 변시지 화백의 작품을 볼 수 있는 곳이며, 지금은 7월 28일까지 바다가 보이는 기당정원 이란는 제목으로 작품을 전시중이다. 기당미술관 건물도 독특한데 조명이 아닌 자연광으로 실내를 밝히고 있다. 미술관 아트라우지에서 바라보는 한라산 풍경도 하나의 작품같이 다가오는 곳. 규모가 큰 미술관은 아니지만 아이들과 함께 들리기도 좋은 곳으로 서귀포...
