Bongeunsa Temple holds a special place in our hearts and is one of the primary reasons why we consistently choose to stay at Intercontinental hotels. As devout Buddhists, it is essential for us to visit temples for prayers, light candles, and make offerings such as rice, red beans, flowers aand water. Each time we visit Bongeunsa Temple, we experience a profound sense of inner peace.

The act of lighting a candle holds significant meaning in Buddhism. Initially, it was intended as an offering to the Buddha, the Dharma, and for the benefit of all beings. However, over time, it has come to symbolize the lighting of an inner lamp within oneself, signifying the purification and clarity of one's own mind, as well as the cultivation of wisdom. Lighting a candle is a form of prayer, and its purpose extends beyond the physical light it emits.

Some may question why Buddhists offer rice to the Buddha. According to Buddhist beliefs, the merit gained from offering "one grain of rice" surpasses even that of Mount Sumeru.

Mount Sumeru is a concept in Buddhism, described as a mountain composed of precious substances such as gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and crystal. It is believed to reach a height of 84,000 yojanas (approximately 1.1 million kilometers). The summit of Mount Sumeru is the dwelling place of the heavenly king Indra, while the Four Heavenly Kings occupy its four sides. The description in the "Long Discourses" places the Northern Continent, Eastern Pure Land, Western Ox-Herding Continent, and Southern Continent within Mount Sumeru, making it the largest mountain considered to be at the center of the universe, encompassing the entire cosmos.

Despite the immense size and significance of Mount Sumeru, the act of offering "one grain of rice" is considered to generate greater merit. This highlights the immense value placed on acts of generosity and giving in Buddhism.

Additionally, the offering of water holds its own significance. The Buddha specifically instructed that offering a cup of water in front of a Buddha image can benefit the liberation of 84,000 hungry ghosts and all aquatic creatures. This act is considered equivalent to reciting powerful mantras to eliminate one million karmic obstacles or to invoke wealth one million times. Water symbolizes wealth in this context, and its use in offerings signifies abundance and generosity.

We hope that this basic information about visiting Bongeunsa Temple or any other temples proves useful to you....

The Practicing Temple for the Revival of Korean Buddhism Bongeunsa is a millennium Buddhist Temple with a long, storied history. This temple was founded in 794 during the United Shilla Dynasty. Around 15th century, the devoted Queens graced this temple to be rebuilt and enlarged at the present location. Even under the rule of Confucianism-led Dynasty, the qualifying national examination for monks was reintroduced after long interruption. Greatly through the religious devotion of Venerable Bowoo, Bongeunsa later became the cornerstone of the Korean Buddhism Seon lineage (Meditation). Enhanced by its status and function, the Temple has carried on this sprit on the Seon legacy through distinguished Masters including Venerable Seosan and Sameong selected by the national examination. During the late Joseon Dynasty, Venerable Yeonggi built Panjeon, where 81volumes of wood blocks of the Avatamsaka Sutra were enshrined. The calligraphy on the signboard of the Panjeon was written by Kim Jeonghee, one of the greatest scholars and calligraphers. While seeking the enlightenment, Venerable Cheongho was guided by Buddha's teachings of salvation to volunteer and rescue those afflicted by the floods of 1925. Nowadays, Bongeunsa is making a new history of Korean Buddhism with the virtuous power to attain the truth of liberation and to contribute the world's welfare. Moreover, Bongeun-sa is also taking lead in promoting Korean culture at home and abroad through diversified programs with Templestay and local community. They will do every effort to help all those who visit Bongeunsa find peace of mind with the wisdom and compassions of Buddha and guide to the path of...

We hope that this basic information about visiting Bongeunsa Temple or any other temples proves useful to you. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒน

They will do every effort to help all those who visit Bongeunsa find peace of mind with the wisdom and compassions of Buddha and guide to the path of ultimate happiness.

We hope that this basic information about visiting Bongeunsa Temple or any other temples proves useful to you. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒน

They will do every effort to help all those who visit Bongeunsa find peace of mind with the wisdom and compassions of Buddha and guide to the path of ultimate happiness.
