Located at Ctra. De Montjuic, 66, Sants-Montjuic, 08038 Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸. General Admission Adult 12€ Guided tours 16€ Montjuic Castle is an old military fortress, with roots dating back to 1640. It currently serves as a Barcelona Municipal Facility. The foundation stone for the basic fortification of the hill was laid in 1640. In 1641, the fort saw its first battle during the Catalan Revolt. Fifty years later, in 1694, new bastions and battlements were erected and the fortress became a castle. In 1751, the old infrastructure was torn down and the current structure was built. The final shape of the castle took form during 1779 and 1799, when major construction works took place to improve the castle. It was during this time, the castle was equipped with 120 cannons. You can get to the castle by foot, car, cable car 🚠, and bus 🚌. As the castle is situated on top of Montjuic Hill, you are afforded with 360 degree views of Barcelona and its surroundings. The parade ground gives you fantastic views of the city, the port, the Mediterranean, the Barcelona coastline and the area of Baix Llobregat. I did the guided tour and found it so interesting and informative. I was really impressed with my experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Barcelona. All areas of the castle are accessible except for the Terrace which has stairs. Saying this, people with mobility issues may have trouble moving around the castle due to the uneven ground. There’s accessible toilets located on the property. I would recommend you visit the Montjuic visitor centre where there is a comprehensive display of the history of Montjuic. The visitor centre occupies 4 rooms in the castle. A wonderful experience. Thumbs...

Our visit to Montjuïc Castle was a truly memorable experience. We took the round-trip cable car from ground level up to the castle, and it was absolutely worth it — the panoramic views of Barcelona from above are stunning and give you a real sense of the city’s scale and beauty. While the cable car is definitely a highlight, there are also other ways to reach the castle, such as by bus or even hiking if you’re up for it.

Although I arrived later than the designated time on my ticket, the staff were very kind and still allowed me entry, which I really appreciated.

The castle itself is rich in history — originally a military fortress dating back to the 17th century, it has served many roles over the centuries, including as a prison and a military stronghold. It’s a place that has witnessed significant moments in Barcelona’s past, and the historical atmosphere is tangible as you explore the grounds.

During our visit, there was quite a bit of refurbishment work happening, which brought some noise and scaffolding to certain areas, but it didn’t take away from the overall experience.

Inside the large open courtyard of the castle, there are accessible facilities including clean washrooms, a small bar, and an ice cream vendor — perfect for taking a break. There’s also plenty of seating where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings.

All in all, Montjuïc Castle is definitely worth a visit, especially for history lovers and anyone wanting sweeping views over Barcelona. Just make sure to bring a camera — and maybe...
