Mercado Central de Atarazanas is a historic market located in the heart of Málaga.
The market is situated on the site of the ancient Atarazanas (shipyards) from the Islamic period. These shipyards were originally used for ship construction and repair. The current building dates back to the 19th century, and it beautifully blends historical elements with modern functionality1.
The market building itself is a testament to 19th-century architecture in Málaga. Its design reflects the elegance of that era. One of the most striking features is the preserved main entrance, which dates back to the Nasrid period (14th century). The entrance consists of a pointed horseshoe arch, adding to the market’s unique character12. Read moreWe visit this Mercado whenever we are in Malaga. We have traveled all over Spain. We have cooked sampled the cuisine in many regions. We have found this central Mercado to be as good as any in Spain (including those in Madrid and Valencia). The fish is extraordinary! The vegetables, like most of Spain, are exceptional and well priced. This is a large mercado but it is still accessible even for those whose "Español no es muy bueno." I must add, that the vendors at this Mercado are extremely helpful! Many speaks several languages nearly all are willing to try their English if you need it, but if you wish to speak Spanish (even if you struggle) they are patient and helpful. All the vendors accept credit cards. Bottom line? I highly recommend this Mercado even if you just want to visit and have a cup of coffee. My guess is, though, that when you visit you will find some things you want you won't be able to...
Read moreNever again! We didn't have a good experience here. Very very noisy and we zero sound deadening we hardly got any sleep. There was collecting the skip bins and 1am-2am and once they had gone there was street cleaning with a woman shouting at her colleague about the water pump racket and then they came back with the skip bins at 4am. Zero consideration of noise towards anyone sleeping (or trying to) There was no way of cutting the outside light out and the patio window single glazed offered hardly any noise filter from the street also could not be secured. The air con has a fault and does not turn off you have to stand on a chair and pull the plug out to stop it. Plus points very modern and clean, great views over the roof tops of the city and location close Centro. Book this with caution, we wouldn't want you to have the same...
