Our 2019 Spain travel was filled with adventure, history and great food & wine.

We were not expecting to find such treasures as a Roman city in the westernmost corner of the Empire.

The Merida, Spain museum offers a synthesis of life in one of the main colonies in Roman Hispania, Augusta Emerita, promoted after the supremacy of Lusitania, and which subsequently became the first effective capital of Hispania.

It houses numerous articles found at the archaeological site in Mérida, which has been awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO.

The National Museum of Roman Art is located in a building by Rafael Moneo that is a reference in contemporary museum architecture.

With a display of emblematic items including Roman mosaics, sculptures, epigraphs and documents, it shows all aspects of the everyday life in a colony, Augusta Emerita, founded by Augustus after one of the episodes in the Cantabrian Wars, and which represents one of the great examples of the Romanization process of Hispania.

Merida has the largest collection of Roman ruins in Spain, and, fittingly, it also boasts a superb museum of Roman art.  Although the museum was first opened in 1986, it looks much newer than that.  Everything about it is great: its collection, its architecture, its presentation.

The building's interior is dramatic, the displays elegant and attractive.

The brick enhances the statues, but the building is so cold that at times I had to wear my gloves.

Each exhibit is given ample space, adding to an overall clean, uncluttered appearance.  Lighting is outstanding, the exhibits are well labelled and interesting on the statues, mosaics, fragments of pediments and artifacts.

Highly recommend visiting...
