The old Madrid slaughterhouse, now repurposed as a cultural and artistic hub, sits on the edge of the Rio Manzanares. Once a center of industry, it has been transformed into a sprawling complex that attracts visitors from all walks of life. The area is now a vibrant space, with galleries, performance venues, and creative workshops filling the former industrial buildings. The atmosphere is a mix of history and modernity, offering a unique glimpse into Madrid’s past while embracing its cultural evolution.
The nearby "Madrid Rio" Park has played a significant role in the revitalization of the neighborhood. Once an industrial wasteland, it now provides a lush green space for locals and tourists alike. The park stretches along the river, offering walking paths, playgrounds, and areas for recreation. It has brought new life to the area, making it a popular spot for both relaxation and outdoor activities.
This transformation has had a positive impact on the entire neighborhood, changing its character and making it an attractive destination. The old slaughterhouse and the surrounding area are now a testament to how Madrid has embraced its past while looking forward to the future.
Visiting this cultural hub is worth the time, not just once but multiple times. Whether you’re exploring the galleries, walking through the park, or simply taking in the views of the river, there’s always something new...
Read moreThe history behind this place is fascinating, and the idea of transforming this place into an art center is brilliant. ""Matadero" a real "slighhouse" many years ago is now a beautiful place dedicated to show Artwork in all its forms. This place is pretty big and it has different sections/rooms around it where all the expositions take place, and a lot of them are completely FREE and the ones charging anything, are really affordable. I should mention that the entrance to Matadero is also free. Highly recommended to register online at mataderomadrid.org and reserve your spot so you don't wait in line outside in the heat or cold. The website is in english and spanish. "El Jardin de las Delicias"/ The Garden of Earthly Delights artwork is AMAZING. The Surrealist Links, Cool 3D world is just spectacular, see some pics down below. The best part of this experience is that it was totally Free. Matadero also has good restaurants and a botanical garden. Bikes are available to rent. As a reference Matadero is located within Rio Madrid Park (Parque Rio Madrid) closer to Plaza Rio 2 Shopping Center. This place is a Must! A lot of history and art behind the Matadero...
Read moreEl Matadero is one of the most funky and cool cultural spots in Madrid. It used to be a slaughterhouse, but now it’s a creative space full of art, performances, and workshops. The vibe is industrial but welcoming, with a mix of locals and visitors hanging out, especially on weekends.
