If you are into geology, gems, fossils, and minerals do not miss this place. It is Spain's version of the Smithsonian Nation Gem & Mineral Museum. You walk in and it is approx 5 stories of open vaulted ceiling with each floor having different geology and mineral or fossil exhibit. The ground level is one huge floor of cases of fossils, huge gems just on the floor between rows of cases, and it is all encircled by case after case of the more stunning and gorgeous gems and minerals the world's mineral collectors and this Museum have been able to have donated or acquired. It is a truly spectacular place and if you are a rock hound that finds themselves in Spain this is an absolutely do not miss spot. BUT note that it closes at 2pm. I showed up at noon and they turned out the lights on me at 2pm. I hadn't even noticed everyone else was gone lol. Go. Donate. This place is special and the Spanish should be proud of their incredibly rich geologic and...

The Museo Geominero is a free museum located in Ríos Rosas, Madrid. While the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME) dates to 1849 the museum itself has been open to the public since 1927. The museum is located in the hq of the IGME which was constructed between 1921 and 1925 and designed by Spanish architect Francisco Javier de Luque.

The museum has an excellent collection of rocks, minerals and fossils which are a lot of fun to look at compare. Specimens on display are predominantly from Spain and its former colonies. The architecture of the grand hall however was a personal highlight as the huge open central gallery space was truly quite breathtaking. The coloured stained-glass ceiling gives the hall an open feeling unlike other I have experienced before and made the space feel quite prestigious.

The museum is free to enter and really impressed me upon my visit, it has metro access via the Ríos Rosas stop on the...
