We accessed the dunes via P.º Costa Canaria, and walked down to the beginning of the dunes walk. At this point, there is a break in the fence that allowed unofficial access to one of the first dunes with great elevation to take photos.
We arrived at about 2pm and the sun was strong and the sand was very hot. Based on the experiences of other visitors, I would not recommend accessing the dunes with any shoes that will easily slip off as the sand will litterally be scorching hot. Some poor kid was screaming as his sliders had fallen off.
We then headed over to the view point which was lovely and managed to take some great photos without venturing onto any of the dunes there are elevated view points and walls to stand on for this and to give the impression you are standing on the sand without disturbing the natural environment. Due to the time of day and having 2 youngsters with us we decided not to undertake the waymarked walk through the dunes and instead escaped into the air conditioned cafe at the view point to have an ice cream and cool down (and to use the nearby public toilets).
If I get a chance to come back, I'd love to take the opportunity to walk the path through the dunes at a sensible time of day... maybe without the ankle...

Additionally if you want to pretend to be Lawrence of Arabia, C3P0 and/or R2D2 or really any famous film characters that have appeared in iconic desert film scenes, then this is an ideal place for that. Running up and down the dunes is awesome fun but you can get quite hot and sweaty and if it's windy you'll get a face full of sand too giving you a weird sandblasted monster look, but I had a great time and also learnt I really need to work on my cardio more. Worth a...
Read moreGreat place for a walk and to access the dunes.
You can park nearby and walk across the dunes to the many kiosks / beachfront little bars.
Also a great place for dune photography. It is awesome. Drone users, it's windier than you think, use a landing mat/towel etc. There are a few hard ground areas between the dunes, use zippy bags, the sand gets everywhere!
Walking up/down the dunes takes effort. Bring water!
Sunglasses and a neck-scarf/bandana etc help keep the sand out when very windy / walking into airborne sand.
It's probably one of the coolest and free places in Maspalomas!
It's...
