Castillo de La Virgen — Attraction in Santa Cruz de la Palma

Located in a nice village with interesting architecture such as balconies modelled on ships. My visit was in afternoon of morning masses for a festival. At least 2 restaurants overflowing into street where family and friends ate together. Ladies in traditional dresses would get up and dance together in street to live musicians such as guitarist or fiddler. Nice historical Fort on a hill. Awesome views of area. Bit tricky to get to by car, if going by car head to the very end of the beach and turn left just past the crossing lights. be careful as the turn as the turn is just after this. You enter a one way system and if you can’t park directly there just follow the road round and there is parking on the hill. To be fair you can walk to this by walking along the beach of the main high street

🇬🇧 Santa Cruz de La Palma was founded in 1493 and became an important port on route to America. After the sacking by french pirates in 1553, the city was rebuilt and fortified. The main fortres is the Habsburg-era Castillo de Santa Catalina (closed during our visit). The other fortress is freely accessible Castillo de la Virgen, which was built much later in 1812. It has been mainly used for celebrations of La Bajada de La Virgen - festivities happening every five years. Halfway between the two forts you will find Barco de la Virgen naval museum, located inside a building made as a replica of Christopher Columbus’ flagship Santa Maria.

Hlavní pevností je Castillo de Santa Catalina z dob vlády Habsburků (během naší návštěvy uzavřená). Druhou pevností je volně přístupná Castillo de la Virgen, která byla postavena až mnohem později v roce 1812.
