Saint Francis Church — Attraction in Santiago de Compostela

Esta iglesia es una visita que merece la pena. Si, como a mí, la catedral de Santiago te pareció agobiante puedes pasarte por la iglesia de San Francisco es hermosa tanto en el exterior como el interior. Está muy próxima a la catedral y es una visita tranquila sin aglomeraciones.

Santiago de Compostela está sobre saturada de visitantes. Y no son tantas las visitas que puedes hacer con tranquilidad.

Aprovecho para deciros que el centro de Santiago se ha puesto tan complicado que es difícil hasta comer a medio día. En varios sitios nos trataron fatal y están llenos hasta los topes. Mi recomendación es que salgáis de Santiago para comer.

Mi impresión de la ciudad ha sido muy mala. Visitar Lugo es una experiencia mucho más agradable y tiene mucho que ver. Así que esta es mi última reseña de Santiago y paso a mis sitios preferidos en A Coruña.

This church is a visit worth taking. If, like me, you found the Cathedral of Santiago overwhelming, you can stop by the Church of San Francisco; it is beautiful both on the outside and inside. It is very close to the cathedral and offers a peaceful visit without crowds.

Santiago de Compostela is oversaturated with visitors. There aren’t that many places you can visit calmly.

I take this opportunity to tell you that the center of Santiago has become so complicated that it’s even difficult to have lunch. In several places, we were treated terribly, and they were packed to the brim. My recommendation is to leave Santiago to eat.

My impression of the city has been very poor. Visiting Lugo is a much more pleasant experience and has a lot to see. So this is my last review of Santiago, and I will move on to my favorite places...

We got married here August 2025 suggested €250 donation to use the church + paperwork (€80ish euros). DO NOT walk on the side corridors with your dress (mine turned charcoal black!) and TELL your hair dresser to make a hidden braid to clip your veil (I lost mine while walking up the aisle). Don Miguel de la Mata is the monk in charge. He went on and beyond to accommodate us and even hired an English speaking priest for our ceremony! —————————————————————————- Nos casamos aquí en agosto de 2025. Siguieron una donación de 250€ para usar la iglesia más papeleo (unos 80 €). NO camines por los pasillos laterales con tu vestido (¡el mío se volvió negro carbón!) y dile a tu peluquera que te haga una trenza escondida para sujetar el velo (yo perdí el mío caminando hacia el altar). Don Miguel de la Mata es el monje a cargo. Hizo todo lo posible para complacernos, ¡e incluso contrató a un sacerdote que hablara inglés para nuestra ceremonia! —————————————————————————— Nous nous sommes mariés ici en août 2025. Ne vous promenez pas dans les couloirs latéraux avec votre robe (la mienne est devenue noir charbon !) et demandez à votre coiffeur de faire une tresse cachée pour attacher votre voile (j'ai perdu la mienne en remontant l'allée). Don Miguel de la Mata est le moine responsable. Il a fait tout son possible pour nous satisfaire et a même engagé un prêtre anglophone pour...

Het klooster van San Francisco de Valdediós werd gesticht door Sint Franciscus van Assisi tijdens zijn bezoek aan Santiago de Compostela in 1214, op de plek waar Val de Dios lag. Het land werd gekocht van de monniken van San Martiño Pinario voor de symbolische jaarlijkse huur van een mand forel. De fundering, omgeven door legendes, wordt beschreven in een inscriptie op de muur van het huidige klooster. Daar zou Sint Franciscus de bouw ervan hebben opgedragen aan een houtskoolbrander genaamd Cotolay, die op wonderbaarlijke wijze een schat vond waarmee hij dit project kon financieren.

Van het oorspronkelijke gebouw zijn slechts vijf gotische bogen in de kloostergang en Cotolay's graf overgebleven. De huidige barokke tempel werd gebouwd tussen 1742 en 1749 en is van grote eenvoud en formele zuiverheid. Een latere neoclassicistische renovatie retoucheerde de gevel, die een afbeelding van Sint Franciscus van de beeldhouwer Ferreiro bevat.

Het Monument voor Sint Franciscus valt op in het atrium, ontworpen als een gigantisch kruis door beeldhouwer...
