St. Gallen Cathedral & Abbey Library - A Spiritual and Cultural Gem

I never miss visiting the St. Gallen Cathedral whenever I’m in St. Gallen, Switzerland. This awe-inspiring baroque cathedral is not only rich in history but also offers a deeply peaceful and reflective atmosphere.

The interior murals are breathtaking, and I often find myself sitting quietly just to admire the beauty and stillness. Behind the cathedral is the St. Gallen Abbey Library (Stiftsbibliothek)—one of the oldest (if not mistaken it’s the 3rd oldest in the world) and most beautiful libraries. It’s a must-visit for history lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike.

Though I’m not Christian, I’ve attended Sunday services simply to experience the magnificent wind organ and angelic choir. The music fills the cathedral with such powerful emotion, it’s truly unforgettable.

This place holds a special spot in my heart. No trip to St. Gallen ever feels complete without...

Visite la catedral hace pocos días. Me preció preciosa, espectacular! Además, vivo en España y me acababan de dar una maravillosa noticia a la que un día antes suplique y medite a nuestro señor. Por lo que cuando vi la catedral, pude agradecerle y hacerle la promesa (que aun tengo que cumplir, pero no tardaré).

Pero en dicho a la catedral, tanto por dentro como fuera, es fascinante. Esta muy bien cuidada y conservada. Un buen y bonito lugar de culto.

Lo que... me paso algo en ella, y es por esto que no puedo darle las 5 estrellas. Tampoco es grabe, ya que es entendible. Explico: vi una puerta abierta, y resulta que no tenia que estar abierta. Era la puerta de alrededor del altar. No lo sabia, ya que en mi ciudad o ciudades de mi país (España), en algunas ocasiones están abiertas y puedes acceder. Por lo que salió una mujer muy enfadada, y en vez de sacarnos tranquilamente, nos sacó a gritos. No entendí lo que decía... no hablo su idioma. Pero sabia que por sus gritos estaba muy furiosa.

Y lo segundo que nos paso. Que ahora al ver las reseñas de mucha más gente, veo que también tomaron fotos dentro... Pues justo en la foto que muestro dentro (donde salgo yo de espaldas con esta maravillosa catedral)... salió la misma mujer que explique, con gritos más elevados donde resonaron por toda la catedral. Todo el mundo se giro. La mujer sabia que no hablaba alemán (que hablo español o entiendo el ingles como todo viajero). Sus gritos eran el Alemán, que no entiendo. Pero hubiera entendido perfectamente si ella hubiera dicho "pleas no photo", y sin tantos gritos que resonaran. Toda la situación me avergonzó y me fui.

Por lo que recomiendo, que no tomes fotos en ella (a no ser que te pase como a mi, que pasaste por St. Gallen y te dijeran donde estaba la catedral).

Y que solo la visita la hagas desde los bancos para meditar. Ya que no puedes acceder nada. Que es completamente respetable.

Por todo el resto. Formidable....

So, so beautiful. I actually enjoyed this cathedral more than some of the other more famous ones in Europe - it might not have the sheer scale and grandiosity of those, but it more than makes up for it by the unique and gorgeous design. The color scheme and floral motives evokes a feeling of peace and serenity. So lovely to just sit for a while. I envy the people who live here and can just pop in whenever they like!

As a bonus, this place is underrated, so there are very few crowds, no lines(!!) and no...
