Via Ferrata de Charmey — Attraction in Val-de-Charmey

It is a splendid Via Ferrata until you reach the top. Climbing down is just less fun and there is a considerate amount of it after you reach the summit. The biggest drawback is their safety clipping system. There were many situations where it was downright frustrating to maneuver the damn clip for the thousandth time. It is too heavy and often causing danger because you have to use one hand to move the clip and hold on to the wall with the other. Without that terrible system it would easily be a four star climb. The other drawback was the lack of signage for the return trip down. We ended up sliding down a slippery forest in order to find the path back to base. The staff was super nice and with better waypoints that guide you, and a different safety system it would be outstanding. (I will say that the rental rates are very low and fair.) Really friendly staff. Rented equipment was good (other reviews said otherwise, but we had no problems and the explanation was good). If you're fast, you should consider renting other equipment elsewhere, with 2 carabiners, to allow you to overtake others. There are also shortcuts (K4 difficulty) to overtake others as well.

We were first timers and the easiest (K3) route was good for us, but it will be challenging for people who are not in shape.

The website says to get gloves. Do this. We had gloves and we wouldn't have had a fun time if we didn't.

Le personnel d'accueil et les personnes qui travaillent pour Charmey sont vraiment super sympas et souriants. Ça me fait toujours plaisir de venir faire des activités à Charmey.

Concernant la Via Ferrata, que j'ai testé pour la première fois aujourd'hui (K3).

Elle est accessible relativement facilement, mais attention pas pour tout le monde. Attention de ne pas vous surestimer. La vue est magnifique, alors profitez-en !

Pour les parents qui veulent aller trop vite avec vos enfants. Je vous conseille de ne pas venir avec vos enfants trop jeunes. Ils devraient commencer par faire de l'escalade et de l'accrobranche avant de se mettre à la Via Ferrata. Encore aujourd'hui, un enfant a paniqué et est resté bloqué en début de parcours. L'hélico à du venir le chercher dans la falaise.

Par contre le baudrier et le système qui est loué par Charmey n'est à mon goût pas optimal et je vous conseille de ne PAS LE LOUER, pour les raisons suivantes :

Impossible de dépasser un groupe qui est plus lent. Donc on doit rester derrière et attendre. Parfois, c'est très physique d'attendre au milieu d'une paroi. Si un enfant panique, il n'est pas possible de vraiment bien l'aider car il est bloqué. Le système est parfois dur à passer entre chaque support métallique. C'est même parfois un casse-tête. Si une personne est bloquée, ça provoque un énorme bouchon.

Je vous conseille fortement de louer ou d'acheter votre propre matériel dans un magasin de montagne avec baudrier, casque et longes de sécurité et de ne pas utiliser le matériel loué par Charmey qui est uniquement bien pour faire de l'accrobranche.

Commencez par faire des Via Ferrata de niveau facile, cela vous évitera de devoir appeler l'hélicoptère pour venir vous aider au milieu...
