I saw a father and his child struggling in the water, unable to make it back to shore — and no one was helping, not even the lifeguard. I didn’t think twice. I jumped in to help.
As I reached them, I felt the currents pulling me backward and downward. The waves were crashing over me — I couldn’t breathe. I was pushing the child forward, but I was being dragged further out. In those terrifying moments, I began seeing flashbacks of my life. I truly believed it was over. I told myself:
“This is it. I’m going to die. I’ll never see my family again.”
Somehow, I remembered not to fight the current. I started swimming parallel to the shore, trying to escape the rip — but I was completely exhausted. I couldn’t go on. Just when I thought I had nothing left, a Russian man saw me struggling and came to help. He pulled me out of the water. He saved my life.
There were no clear signs warning about dangerous currents — only red flags, which I assumed were for boats or paragliding. I saw others swimming there, so I thought it was safe.
But it wasn’t. It was deadly.
This was the scariest experience of my life. The beach needs proper warning signs — not just flags, but clear explanations in multiple languages. Tourists and locals alike need to know the danger. It shouldn’t take someone almost dying to realize how serious these waters are.
Please be careful. Please don’t...
Read moreThis is my third visit to Phuket but first time staying in Karon. The beach is alright, and for those who do not live near beaches, this would be considered fabulous. However, I think the beach infrastructure and surrounds is looking a bit weathered, especially in the northern half of the beach. It’s a bit of a mess at various entrance points, with rubbish strewn among the bushes. I walked the entire length of the beach and it seems better maintained near the south. The water was very choppy the entire time we were there, and it’s not really ideal swimming conditions. But great for a refreshing dip in the water. It is best to observe the flags at the beach - most of our visit the flags were red (do not swim). There are the usual tourist attractions like jet ski hire and parasailing. There are beach lounge chairs for which you just pay a small amount to use for the day. You will need to BYO towel. There are also the usual beach vendors selling all sorts of things like beach hats, sunglasses, souvenirs- and weirdly there was one person with a pet loris with which tourists can pay to take photos (I think this is sad for the loris and possibly illegal) For a pristine beach, I think Mao Khao beach (north part of Phuket ) is lovelier and quieter. Kamala Beach (middle part of Phuket) is quieter than Karon but not as quiet...
