Bai Toey — Restaurant in Karon

I have to say the food is great, the dongyum soup and the bear rice are so good. But I am not sure about the service. I called them on phone want to make a reservation but they said they don’t accept reservations. So we just walked in, and there were clearly two table marked as reserved. Ok then we said we can wait outside for any available table since the outside garden area was full of people. We can see the inside canteen area was empty, but the lady still said no “ the inside is not opened”. So we waited outside and finally got two separated tables for us four person. After 20 minutes they let bunch of western tourists( clearly just randomly walk in ) got into the inside area for dinner. So Is it really not open inside? Or they just want to serve western customer? Is it really cannot make any reservation or just because we are Chinese ? Is it really necessary to choose your customer based on race?...

We had an amazing team dinner at Bai Toey yesterday.

If you’d like to escape the madness of Patong and opt to head out to Karon Beach, make a stop here for an authentic Thai meal. While some may find the “teddy bear rice” a little kitschy, it’s just part of the charm of this little joint.

Their menu is extensive and if you’re lost, owner Tom will help you out. We loved the recommendations, esp the Panaeng curry (chicken and beef) and shrimp in dry curry. The little pot of chicken green curry was chock full of meat and vegetables.

If it wasn’t such a warm evening, it would have been nice to also try their Tomyam or Tomkha.

Service was great - quick and efficient given we were a large table of 16 pax with multiple requests and food restrictions. The staff made sure we were well-watered and fed.

Price is really good compared to other places. I ordered a veg pad Thai and my serving was pretty big and they kindly replaced egg with cashew nuts. My husband ordered panang chicken curry with rice but his dish was a little smaller (but still tasty) and he said the rice was a little dry. Rice also cost us an extra 30 bhat. We went in the evening and there were not a lot of customers. Ladies there are very nice and the food was served quickly. They made sure we were happy with our food. Downside is even water costs money there. We got served a little cup of vanilla ice cream complimentary of the restaurant. We sat outside and the environment was nice. The sitting area had a border of small trees making the experience feel very intimate. Overall great place for the...
