In fact, this building has nothing to do with Baron Steingel and the Knights. This is really Pidgorsky's house. But it is mistakenly called the house of Baron Steingel, Bluebeard, the house of the tobacco king Salve, a knight's castle. In 1892 this plot of land was bought by a rich nobleman Mykhailo Pidhorsky. He was an entrepreneur, a tycoon, successfully engaged in agriculture and owned a large amount of land in Kyiv and Volyn provinces. In 1896-1898, at his request, the architect Mykola Dobachevsky built a castle on the Yar. Valu, 1. This architect participated in the construction of the Panama Canal. The interiors were designed by Robert Friedrich-Melzer. The services of this designer were mainly used by kings and emperors to decorate palaces. However, Pidgorsky died in 1899 in Berlin. This house is one of the most romantic and mysterious buildings in Kiev. After the construction was completed, a cafe called "Near the Golden Gate" was opened in it. The last owner of the house was Lev Brodsky, who owned it in 1916-1917. Pidhorsky's house played an important role in the formation of the Czechoslovak Republic. There has long been a large community of Czechs and Slovaks in Kyiv. During the First World War, members of the community participated in the formation of a combat squad that fought on the side of the Russian army. It also included Czech and Slovak prisoners of war. The headquarters of the Czech movement and the Czech Committee in Kyiv was the Prague Hotel at 36 Volodymyrska Street. It is very close to the house at 1 Yaroslaviv Val Street. Czechs often visited the cafe-confectionery, in addition to the fact that their compatriot also kept a cinema nearby. The house housed various commissions of Czechs and Slovaks, including those for prisoners of war. In 1917, a branch of the Czechoslovak People's Council in Russia (Odbochka) was opened in part of the premises. Professor Tomasz Masaryk was elected its head. He visited the house regularly. In December 1917, there was a plenary session "Odbochki", there are even photos of all participants in the castle yard. Tomas Masaryk later became president of Czechoslovakia. In 1918, the building was rented by the First Jewish Consumer Society, which ran a bakery in the basement. In 1919 this house was nationalized. Since the twenties of the last century there have been communal apartments. The house was lucky to survive the radical reconstruction of Kyiv in the 1930s and the bombing of the city during World War II. In 1986, the house received the status of an architectural monument. The board from the times of the USSR still hangs on it. In the 1980s, the Kyiv Bureau of Travel and Excursions was located there. In the early 2000s, people began to move out of communal apartments. It was bought by Oleksandr Leufenfeld, a former Kyiv City Council deputy. In 2013, the Czech leader Milos Zeman offered the Ukrainian government to partially repay Ukraine's public debt (which arose during the construction of the Ukrainian gas transportation system with the participation of Czechoslovak companies) by transferring Pidhorsky's house to the Czech embassy. But the house was privately owned, the offer was not accepted. Today the house is abandoned, but under protection. Only in the gallery on the ground floor is an exhibition of icons from Mount Athos on a permanent basis.

Beautiful building in historical centre of Kyiv near the Golden Gate. Sometimes excursions take visitors inside to show the remains of embroidery and unique fire places. Needs refurbishment. A long time it has been abandoned. Near it there is India House, and next to it there is a mansion which according to the rumours belongs to the current Ukrainian president. On the opposite side of the street there is...
