It is an iconic architectural symbol of Wales' maritime trade and political development. It is currently part of the Welsh Parliament and serves as an exhibition space showcasing the history and culture of Wales. Built in 1897 in the French Gothic Renaissance style, it was designed by William Frame and is distinguished by its striking red terracotta bricks. The clock tower is unofficially known as the 'Baby Big Ben' or the 'Big Ben of Wales.' Originally constructed as the headquarters of Cardiff’s Bute Dock Company, it later served as office space after the company merged with the Cardiff Railway Company. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cardiff was a major hub for coal exports, and the Pierhead Building played a central role in managing the region's trade and...

A big thank you to Hannah, a member of staff at the Pierhead Building / the Cymru Parliament for telling us all about the Tiger Bay and answering our questions on the history of the Docs. My partner and I received a very warm welcome and marvelled at the history of this peculiar building. I was impressed to find out that Cardiff, and specifically the Docks, have always been a culturally diverse place. We also enjoyed the temporary exhibition on female community leaders on the second floor - very inspiring!
