Talk about the place that just won't die!.. The Cambridge Centre has been my local mall for nearly my entire life. I have seen hundreds of stores open and close here. I have seen the mall at max capacity, and I've seen it as an 'abandoned mall'. This is a local relic that just won't quit.
With a modest food court, go-kart track, and 2 arcades, this mall has a lot for entertainment, and food. However, the go-kart track and arcades are very fresh. The go-kart track is built into the old skating rink next to the food court - so let's talk about the issues with that. I don't know about you, but I don't want to eat my fried rice while constantly listening to the go-karts braking and crashing into the barriers. Yes, they are electric karts, but they are still shockingly loud. You can't really hold a conversation in the food court if multiple karts are racing, and it can be quite surprising and jump-scary when a kart hits a barrier or slams it's brakes.
When it comes to stores, this mall is showing signs of its second wave of abandonment. Stores come and go like a revolving door, and heading to the left side of the mall with the former Hudson Bay, it really feels like a ghost town at times. Half of the stores on that side of the mall are closed and just empty lots now. But putting blinders on, and focusing on the rest of the mall really solves that issue... The newer renovations (a few years old now) have modernized parts of the mall, with Sportchek, Marks, and Indigo sporting a clean, modernist design.
There have even been a couple of celebrity sightings here - Notably Ricky Berwick (Youtuber, and social media star), as well as Justin Bieber, who was spotted buying jeans in a former store.
Overall, it's a bit of a smaller mall, being able to walk the entire mall within minutes. Nevertheless, it's still a fun place to spend an hour or 2. When given the choice, or the need to go shopping, I would choose any of the other malls in the area (Stone Road Mall, Fairview Park Mall,...
Read moreThe Cambridge Centre is a great place to do mall laps. Aside from the variety of merchants in the mall, and the movie theatre and the hockey rink, it is a great mall to stroll. There are so many things to look at, and do; a array of food vendors, and the info displays near the rink allow you to squeeze in a little bit of education or learning, while you are there. I will also mention the quality of the reclining seats in the Cineplex movie theatre are so good, it is worth the drive to the Cambridge Centre to take in a movie. An additional feature of the mall is the large scale map of the Grand River region on the floor, near the main entrance. Identifying where you are on the map, and witnessing others do the same, or witnessing people help each other to navigate the map, transform the feature into a unifying experience. People really enjoy looking at course of the Grand River to identify where they are, and where they live, and on more than one visit, the map has inspired people to share their interesting stories about the region. In addition to the ample parking the mall offers, the building is serviced by public transit and along with the movie theatre, is...
