The Backs: Hire a punt on the River Cam, or you may be able to walk along some college grounds (although now, most college gates at the back are shut You now need a pass - shame on you University exclusive academia) However it is worth a glimpse from a punt as it is incredibly calming and beautiful - if you can access the Backs From bridge to bridge you will see stunning green lawns, exclusive gardens and trees Privileged students galore hurrying to lectures or relaxing fully stretched out along the river banks studying or just chatting. Would have given this a 5 star rating as it is a wonderful sight to behold. However the covid pandemic and other things changed all this. The Backs used to be accessed via the back entrances of the colleges. Slowly gates have been locked and a custodian is placed at most entrances. Cambridge residents and visitors can now no longer access The Backs easily 2 stars therefore given as l findcthis unacceptable as a resident Something l once freely loved is now denied, so very sad this exclusive privilege! Social class and distinction still reigns and is much alive and kicking in Cambridge. However enjoy the short video of what once was...

The Backs on foot: from Newnham Walk across the green spaces past Queen’s, Trinity, and King’s. There are plenty of opportunities to sit on grassy areas or the occasional bench. Not only will you see the backs of the colleges, but you will notice the bridges. After reaching a small roundabout, you can walk down the hill to the right – to the Cambridge Museum (folk museum) and Magdalene Street – with many delights. Castle Hill Car Park is not too far from The Backs, or – walking from the Grand Arcade, one walking route is past Great St Mary’s, down Senate House Passage, and Garrett Hostel Lane with its namesake bridge. You will come out opposite Clare College...

Attractive small park area, home to one of the most iconic views in Cambridge. The magnificent buildings of King's College dominate the scene looking across the river, while punts travel past in the foreground. At the time of my visit in early April, the wooded area was carpeted with blue and white flowers, lending it a natural feel that contrasts well with the surrounding architecture. The paths are well maintained and the area kept spotlessly clean. A short walk across Garret Hostel Bridge from the city center, The Backs is a must-see location for visitors to Cambridge. Paid parking is available by the side of Queen's Road for up to 4 hours.
