The St. James Quarter in Edinburgh has undergone a remarkable evolution over the years. Its history can be traced back to the early 18th century when the area was predominantly residential, with elegant Georgian townhouses lining the streets. However, by the mid-20th century, urban decay set in, leading to the demolition of many historic buildings and the decline of the area. In the late 20th century, plans for revitalization began to take shape, aiming to transform the area into a vibrant commercial and leisure hub. The St. James Centre, a shopping mall and office complex, was constructed in the 1970s, marking the beginning of this rejuvenation effort. However, over time, the centre began to show signs of ageing and became outdated. In the early 21st century, ambitious redevelopment plans were unveiled to modernize the St. James Quarter. The project aimed to create a mixed-use development comprising retail spaces, restaurants, hotels, residential units, and public spaces. Construction commenced in the mid-2010s, with the old St. James Centre demolished to make way for the new development called St. James Quarter. I'm rewriting my St James review as the centre has been rebuilt. Not everyone likes it but I do. I come to St James to support Scottish businesses who have bet big with a shop inside - businesses like Maki & Ramen and dozens inside Bonnie and Wild. I come to access business that can probably live without me but I'd like to try at least once. Duck and Waffle and The Alchemist are two that I've tried and been impressed with. There is a John Lewis here and that's very helpful. There's also comic cons in the basement car park and that's very strange but I'm delighted. I'll sandwich in some negatives as some of the brands here are horrors. Some international bullies with poor human rights or tax records and offers touting expensive and pointless, sometimes dangerous health claims. It's more good than bad, though. They have toilets open late, it is clean and easy to navigate. [December 23 - Despite being posh, many stores inside are opening close to Xmas. Handy!] [March 24 - Still feels posh but the Boots is very handy!] [October 24 - Appreciate that SJQ published community appropriate festive plans well in advance]
