Staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and informative, however, after reading the 6 display boards we were invited to stay and watch a video running on a loop system, which did not include a warning for what we were about to see. It was a totally inappropriate, a boringly slow, poorly produced film showing numerous violent scenes, including a dead man hanging by his neck from a tree, another murdered man floating facedown in a pool of water! There were children in the room aged 4 and 9 whose parents were also not prepared for what was to come, they quickly covered their children’s eyes during the scenes that appeared suddenly and without any pre-warning whatsoever. Read moreThe building is worth a look and then you can pop inside. It is free. When we went, in one room, there were six posters on easels outlining the town's history over the time of the existence of the building up until the Cheese Riots in the 1660s. The other room is a gift shop. In the poster room, there was a larger screen TV and some guests requested to view a film regarding the history of slavery. I am assuming this is what another reviewer was warning guests about--although I'm unclear how anyone could expect to avoid violence in a film about slavery. We didn't watch this film; but, instead, in the giftshop area, watched a lovely little film about life on the islands in the early 20th century and a woman who recorded the songs...

The guide was great and really helped to tell the story of the place. The information on the displays was interesting and helped me to gain a better understanding of how the house fitted in with the local history and the history of Scotland.
There's not much else to do nearby though. We went on a wet Monday. We parked in the nearby multi-storey carpark which was busy but reasonably priced. I wouldn't be going back...
