The food at this restaurant is excellent, however our experience with the service was not a very good one. The food came quickly and that was great, but the waiters seemed to continually point out and shame us for how much food we had ordered. From the start it felt very unwelcoming and as if our presence was a major inconvenience to them.
We ordered our food and then someone at our table requested an additional dish just a few minutes later. The waiter seemed annoyed that we had ordered another dish, saying “you already have a lot of food” and “it won’t all fit on the table.” I considered the reasons he may have said this - 1. Perhaps The kitchen was about to close - but no, according to the website they were due to stay open for another two hours. 2. Maybe we would need an additional table and that would take a table away from another patron - but no, there were three or four open tables, and no wait time when we arrived. It simply didn’t make sense - we’re paying for the food, let us order as much as we like.
Additionally, the waiter had made no move to tell us that was a lot of food when we had initially ordered. So why bring it up later? Then, other waiters continually pointed out that we had ordered a lot of food. Some jokingly, which is fine, but others seemed to say it almost shamefully. Given that we ate most of the food, were respectful customers, and paid the bill with an added tip, this behavior was unacceptable.
Ultimately the food was great, with the exception of the Saag dishes, which used sautéed/cooked spinach for the base instead of puréed spinach which is traditional. Even though the other food was fantastic, the experience was so off-putting that I doubt we will be returning.
Edit - after reading through other reviews, I am noticing that a lot of South Asian people say the staff was very rude while many White people say they were extremely courteous. Perhaps this is a case of discrimination, which is of course entirely...
Read moreThis restaurant has the worst Indian food I have ever tasted. No flavour at all. They judged us as soon as we walked in to the restaurant. We had booked a table for 20:45 so we know they were expecting us. I had picked up my son from the rigs where he works so he wasn't dressed great. Jogging bottoms and his hair style is braids which were pulled into a ponytail, trainers. As soon as they saw us, they whispered and quickly cleaned a table right next to the kitchen door at the back and placed us there and not in the main restaurant. There was also a couple during on the adjacent table. The lady was not of sound mind as she said some very strange things across the table. It appears they use that area for people they want to "keep away" from others in the main restaurant where they take all their photos. The food was so bad, a very tasteless garlic chilli chicken and an overly sweet dansak. I've had much better food at the Cinnamon Indian Restaurant and a much better welcome. Rajah, it's advisable you don't judge people so quickly. After reading this you will know who we are as our visit was only Friday this week 8/7/22 . This was my first visit to your restaurant. My son lives in London so he was just passing through, but my husband and I live locally since moving from London, (a place where you are certainly not judged so quickly). My husband also works away so we have not had a chance to visit as a couple yet, needless to say this will no longer happen. Very disappointed with your service and your food. The waiter even had the nerve to ask us if we wanted to add a tip to the bill. We politely explained why the answer was a "no". A horrible experience.
Stay away from this place I if you want good tasting Indian food, a warm welcome and...
Read moreThis was not my first visit to the Rajah, but I went with a group as part of a Stag Night. It wouldn't have been my choice as I remember the food only being ok and it being expensive. As it happens, my recollection did not fail me. The food was fine, but no more. In the last few years it seems nothing has been spent to refresh or change the decor, and as the restaurant is in a small basement I feel this needs attention. The feeling during the meal was of being cramped, things were excessively cluttered, and too many people in a small windowless room seemed to lead to it being excessively noisy. Due to the cramped conditions I saw that people had to move from their seats so that people from other tables could leave or visit the restrooms.
And the final factor that means I will not visit again is that it is too expensive. Portions aren't generous, and there is nothing unique or particularly well done to justify the cost. Inverness is well supplied with similar restaurants that I would say deliver better food but at a more reasonable price. I've ordered nicer food from a local Indian takeaway for me and my wife, and it's cost less than just the meal for me in the Rajah. I've eaten in Sam's, which is a literal stone's throw away, and again it served larger portions and nicer food but at a better price.
So I'm sorry but I cannot recommend the Rajah, especially with better...
