The Ropery is a working reminder of how rope is made and one of only four ropery's built for the Royal Navy.
The building in which the Ropery is located in one of the longest Georgian buildings in Europe, and as a result, a bicycle is used by those working in the ropery when demonstrations are held of how rope is made. However, a timed ticket is needed when rope making in in process so the guide can lead a group around and explain the process.
There is also a small museum on the history of rope making at the dockyard. However over the years much of the former exhibits have gone along with some of the demonstrations on how rope was processed and made have gone. This includes how rope was prepared and tested.
Alongside the old ropery is the more modern business of rope making with smaller machines and synthetic fibre which may or may not be working depending on orders.
As it is a commercial business rope can be brought, and there is a small gift shop located near the entrance of the ropery.
As there are steps to the ropery, wheelchair access is limited, and the walkway beside where rope making is narrow and limited, especially at peak time
In addition, it is very noisy when the rope is being made and so may not be idea for those with sensory disabilities, though there is access when rope is not being made.
For safety, visitors are reminded to keep behind the barrier when rope is being made and not lean over or reach into where the rope is being made.
