Fantastic little traditional Yorkshire seaside town, totally uncommercialised. My husband and I went on Good Friday 2023. We thought it might be a nice place to retire one day maybe. Yes the traffic was horrendous, but once we got beyond it (via a visit to unique little Thixendale and the only pub in the village) and arrived in Filey, we felt like we'd stepped back in time to the 70's. Even though the weather was less than ideal, we still managed a walk along the promenade and along the beach before the tide came in. We had lunch in a small cafe on Hudson St, where the owners were very friendly and welcoming. We had an ice cream on the shore front and looked for fossils on the far beach before heading up back into the town centre. A drink in a charming, dog-friendly micro pub was followed by a delicious fish and chip dinner in CJs. My husband couldn't refrain from exclaiming how wonderfully inexpensive everything was (we're from Leeds where things are pretty pricey!). Finally, we took an evening stroll back along the promenade and marvelled at the quaintness of the place, with the fairy lights decorating the main streets and understated coloured lamps highlighting the verges below the trees straddling the incline from the promenade to the main town centre. After purchasing some basic provisions from the friendliest Spar shop we'd met, we reluctantly headed home to busy Leeds, but vowed to return soon to...
Read moreIt's a fabulous beach. Beautiful location. No dogs, which is great for younger children to play in the sand without the concern of playing where an animal has done it's business and preferable when a child fears animals (however friendly they maybe).
The beach with the tide out is big.
You can have hours of chill time on a blanket, deck chair, or take beach games/bats/balls with you and, of course, a bucket and spade or go for a long beach stroll etc
There's also a lovely little paddling pool with a few seats surrounding it .
When we were there the beach felt quiet even though the area is full if parked cars.
That leads on to why only 3 stars
There's absolutely no parking whatsoever unless you arrive early, lucky that someone leaves or patient to venture out towards residential streets without restrictions , and then you have an extremely long walk carrying chairs, etc unless you are savvy or have help to do a quick drop off before you park/with the fear or a parking warden waiting to take a photo of your vehicle. Hence 3 stars, not 5
At the end of our visit I had no choice but to park near the ramp to load up a full boot of beach chairs etc, rushing to and from the beach to the car and narrowly missed getting a parking ticket
I've only visited once. I'll probably go again.
Considering the lack of parking, the council should have an official drop off zone for...
Read moreAgain a tiny piece of crowded beach for our dogs to go on and an enormous part of the beach for families, which was mostly empty as everyone was on the dog beach hundreds of people and kids ,no social distancing going on , far too many people for the size of the beach, these beaches need sorting out so it's fair for families and dogs, equal parts ,with proper signs saying which part is which ,coz im sick of going to the beaches and my dogs are not allowed ,only in a tiny part of the beach miles away from parking and as a disabled person it was ridiculous as the car park was heaving and our car ended up being too far away from THE DOG PART !!!. Also there were too many people walking close to one another with no masks on,no social distancing, its almost like people think the virus has gone away, i left the area as I was very worried about the amount of people allowed to roam around Filey with no thought of...
