Visited back in 2004 and found few old school pictures. A walk into the castle ruins is a bit disquieting, especially when you know that a massive monument once stood on the spot. Pieces of masonry seem strewn haphazardly around the grounds. However, several significant pieces of the puzzle have survived, and hint at the wonders that originally dominated the site.

When completed, diamond-shaped Aberystwyth Castle contained two twin-towered gatehouses, a barbican, four gateways, and several round towers placed along the curtain walls. Sadly, what has survived are parts of the outer ward's curtain and angle-towers and fragments of the inner ward's east and northwest gateways and angle- towers. The most notable relic is a tall tower in the inner ward.

I would recommend to visit if you are...

Visited during our stay in Aberystwyth. I was expecting a "complete" castle ๐Ÿฐ, like the ones at other places around Wales, but the ruins were worth a visit non the less ๐Ÿ˜, no entry fee either !! Plenty of little nooks and crannies to explore that generally led you up to a higher, slippy, level. Signs dotted around stating the ruins were hazardous โ€ผ๏ธ and not really open to the public ๐Ÿ˜ณ but as plenty of other folk were there also exploring we figured why not !! Couldn't see any boards around to tell you about the castle history and how it became to be in the state it is now in but there may have been some around ๐Ÿค” Public toilets ๐Ÿงป๐Ÿšพ nearby, although a 40p charge to use, playground for the kids, plenty of picnic spots and amazing views all round whether it be mountains โ›ฐ or...

If you want to wear the kids out take them for a run around the castle and park. My grandkids always insist that they go when thier here on holiday. They will quit happily spend a couple of hours playing hide and seek and running over the castle ruins. Even though I tell them not to run but when nan is out of sight seems I'm out of mind to. Then after a good play they want to go on the crazy golf also by the castle. Then down to coffee 1 for milkshakes and cake. They buy thier own cake from pocket money as nan would need a second mortgage for 3 of them. By the time we have finished the shopping they are well and truly worn out. So you get a bit of piece and quite when you get them back home and nan is able to relax...
