Strange atmosphere here, not helped by several derelict buildings on the promenade. Not sure what to make of the place. Bit of a stoney beach. I noticed quite a few large jellyfish in the water ( from the quayside). No idea if they are the stinging variety. Will add more tomorrow after my second day here.
Well the place grew on me. Some interesting shops and places to eat. They had a litter team driving around emptying the litter/recycling bins-so well done local council. They also need to address the dog mess on many pavements. Seems this town attracts many dog owners and some of them are not picking up. Dog Wardens? Come on Aberystwyth Council- this needs dealing with !
Its also a bit unusual to have student accomodation on a Promenade- but maybe thats better than it being Amusement Arcades.
Strange arrangements on the pier. 1. To sit on the pier you walk through an arcade and a snooker venue. The pier itself is not really worth it anyway . Small and scruffy/souless. 2. Order chips at the shop on the Pier entrance and they take your money , then you join a queue for 15 mins whilst they cook it, and will even text you when its ready in case you wander off! Never seen this before in my life. Chips are Fast Food- serve me straight away from pre-prepared hot food. Very unconventional. Tasted ok though.
Theres an excellent J.D. Wetherspoons in the Railway Station. Had I known it was there earlier, I would have avoided the chippy.
Would I return to Aberystwyth? Probably not, I have seen it now. Too many other places to explore rather than revisit a place I have...
Read moreCharming coastal town in that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and vibrant local culture. Situated on the picturesque Cardigan Bay, the town boasts stunning seafront views, especially at sunset, when the sky is painted in hues of orange and pink.
One of the highlights of Aberystwyth is its beautiful promenade, perfect for a leisurely stroll along the beach. The historic Aberystwyth Castle ruins provide a glimpse into the town's rich past and offer spectacular views of the coastline. For a more contemporary cultural experience, the National Library of Wales is a treasure trove of Welsh history and literature.
The town is also home to Aberystwyth University, which adds a youthful and dynamic vibe to the area. The university's arts centre hosts various events, from theatre performances to art exhibitions, catering to diverse interests.
However, like any town, Aberystwyth has its quirks. The weather can be unpredictable, often bringing sudden rain showers, so it's wise to be prepared. Additionally, while the town has a range of dining options, some establishments may have inconsistent quality, as I found during my stay.
Despite these minor drawbacks, Aberystwyth's welcoming community, beautiful landscapes, and rich cultural offerings make it a delightful destination worth visiting. Whether you're exploring the historic sites, enjoying the coastal scenery, or immersing yourself in local events, Aberystwyth has something...
Read moreI decided this year’s staycation would be Aberystwyth. I had certainly left it too long since I had last visited the town. My first thoughts about the town is it’s a vibrant place of both old and new melding together with lots of renovation taking place. There is one thing I have got to say first that is, I hate the seagulls there. Whenever possible my first meal at any coastal break is Fish and Chips. Recommended on the North Beach seafront was Chip Box 4, as we sat on a seafront bench seat I was tucking in and enjoying my meal, I was saving the best part of the fish to last when suddenly I was attacked! Sweeping in from behind me, hitting my head, a seagull knocked my meal straight out of my hand, quickly there were three seagulls attacking my food directly in front of me. I manage to get the wasted food and put it in a nearby bin. But it left me feeling very bitter. Fortunately, it did not mar the holiday and I do not have anything bad to say about the rest of the holiday. There were quite a few things I would have liked to have done but a week was not long enough. It’s a great place to walk with many scenic views. What I can say is I won’t leave it as long to make a return visit. A final note, on the last day I went back to the Chip Box 4 to have my fill of Fish and Chips, it might have been a warm day, but I enjoyed them on the seafront,...
