This ruined tower, standing on a grassy mound that is covered with daffodils in the spring, has been much restored and improved since my last visit a few years ago. It was once the keep of a mighty castle, built by William the Conqueror in 1068. It's a long climb up a steep flight of stairs to get to the entrance. Adult admission at the door was £11.50 including a donation (£6.50 for children, £10.50 concessions, under 5's free), but you pay less if you book online in advance. I also bought a beautifully illustrated guidebook for £4.50, which includes a map and lots of information about the tower's history. It's basically a ruin, but you can still see original fireplaces, a medieval toilet, and the private chapel. Around the ground floor, there are info boards and also audio chairs where you can sit and listen to the stories of York residents who lived through the tumultuous and often tragic events of the castle's 1000 year history. Helpful volunteers were on hand to answer any questions. Modern staircases and walkways have made accessibility to the upper floor much easier, but you have to climb a spiral staircase (with a handrail) to get to the roof. Fantastic views of York that stretch for miles on a clear day, and the new wooden roof deck and seating made it easy and pleasant to walk around and view the city from all directions. Maps point out the main landmarks. Clifford's Tower is well worth a visit for both its fascinating history and the views.

**Review: Clifford's Tower, York** Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Clifford's Tower stands as a beacon of history and architectural prowess in the heart of York. While it offers an impressive vantage point over the city and a tangible connection to the past, visitors should be prepared for a relatively minimalistic experience. The tower itself, with its stone walls and historical significance, is an icon of York's long and layered past. It's easy to imagine the stories and events that unfolded here over the centuries, and for history enthusiasts, there's undoubtedly a quiet thrill in standing where so many have stood before. However, it's worth noting that beyond its historic facade, there isn't a wealth of attractions or detailed exhibits within. This makes for a brief visit, ideal for those looking to tick off key landmarks in York but perhaps a tad underwhelming for those seeking an immersive historical experience. In conclusion, Clifford's Tower is worth a visit for its historical significance and panoramic views of York. While it may lack the detailed exhibits or features of some other attractions, its simplicity is a reminder of a bygone era, making it deserving of four stars.

York Castle or more commonly known as Clifford Tower 🏰 is located at the south side of York. It is in ruins today and seats majestically on the top of a hill. It is also unique as it has a circular design. Today this Tower is fully refurbished by the Heritage Board. You can purchase tickets at the entrance and visit the inside of the tower. The two-stories tower has a quatrefoil plan with four circular lobes. You can climb these circular lobes and in one of it, it will lead you to the King’s chapel. (Don’t miss it!!) At the top, you will have a gorgeous 360° view of the south city. ⛰️ Inside the Tower, all round you will have write ups on the history and most heartbreaking would be the story of “Massacre of Jews” whereby 150 Jews committed suicide inside the castle around 1189. This castle is unique in design and rich in history. A good time to visit would be early morning or late afternoon before the sun sets. 🌅The natural light rays gives a perfect opportunity to have beautiful pictures. I will encourage you to spend an hour here followed by a visit to York Castle Museum in front of it. (Take note of their operation hours) #circularcastle #yorkdefence

We visited on a pretty dull and rainy day so there was no line for our visit nor was it very busy. There is 55 step steps to get into the tower itself, the attendants ensure there is a wait between each group of guests to allow time for climbing the stairs. We got lucky that the recent renovations had finished 2 weeks prior to our visit, they were clearly well worth it. Once inside there is a heap of Information about what the tower was and how it was used, the spectical though is the incredible 360 view from the roof top, the new internal stairs make it easy to climb 90% of the way then the remaining 10% uses a mix of the original stairs and reconstructed ones, both a spiral and very narrow staircase not particularly friendly to knees but doable slowly. Once at the top there is many places to sit and take it all in, especially if out of breath from the stairs up all the way. Definitely recommend doing if you are visiting York

Spent an enjoyable hour or so here after seeing it had reopened after a huge programme of much needed restoration & conservation work. What a brilliant job! Well worth the climb up the stairs to see inside the tower. Interesting, well laid out information boards and seating areas with embedded speakers where you hear voices from the past telling you about York - the history of the railway, goal, etc. More stairs are worth the climb to the decked roof for spectacular & unrivalled views over York. Information boards give you information on the buildings which can be seen. A must visit destination especially on a nice sunny day like today - be prepared for it being breezy on the roof deck & make sure you take a look at the car park below - fascinating watching drivers squeezing in & out of parking spaces & going the wrong way in the one way system!
