A lovely place for a family outing. There are some brilliant views of the loch and of the palace. A very interesting historical landmark. Lots of natural greenery - a really relaxing atmosphere. There is a car park nearby that leads directly to the loch via some stairs. (The Vennel Car Park). The loch does not have any protective barriers around it (as of now) so one would need to be mindful of young children. A good place for dog walking.

A lovely scenic part of West Lothian formed over 10,000 years ago by a retreating glacier. It's one of only 2 natural lowland lochs in the region. It's shallow depth makes it a safe place for a variety of water sports and the 2.5 miles around it makes it walkable in an hour or two. My favourite part of the loch is watching the leaves of overhanging trees tickle the waters surface.

Nice walk, quite easy, mostly paved style paths. Nice views of the loch and palace all the way round, about a 2.5 mile walk and decent footwear is advised. Had a few problems with midges even this time of the year but spray kept them pretty much at bay. Good bird life by way of swans and ducks and the odd corvid. Hoping to revisit in the cooler months when it’s not...
