We attended this ghost walk on the 29th May . We arrived at the meeting point and were shocked to see the amount of people behind us. It's obviously a very popular attraction , we have done many ghost walks over the years at various cities around the UK and we would class this as OK. Dont get me wrong , it's not Bad and it's not the best either its just on the level of getting your moneys worth and supporting a local business ( that was mentioned about 15 times by the guy who must of taken about £1.2k that night ) Maybe there were too many people there but we didn't feel a connection with the guide he seemed a bit moody , rushed and that he wanted to be somewhere else but maybe this was part his personality, im not sure. It's ideal to learn about certain areas of the city that you wouldn't of known existed but we thought the stories weren't told with enough power to make them feel scary or good enough to remember. This is just our opinion but it makes us wonder that this is so popular as it's "The Original Ghost Walk " and makes you think it's the best , we aren't convinced it is, we will try another walk next time. You might do this and think it's the greatest ghost walk ever , we just didn't think...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe went on Saturday night (start of ghost week in York) and waited outside the pub.
There just have been 250-300 people waiting outside which baffled us as surely they all couldnāt be going on the ghost tour.
We were wrong. En masse, a huge crowd of people followed the guide, and not to be divided up like we thought.
We pre paid on the internet, but not sure why we bothered. No checks to see who had paid, so anyone could have tagged along.
We werenāt the only ones in the crowd disappointed. We got talking to a few other people who were shocked at how big the tour was. They were expecting a max of 20-30 people like we were.
As the tour went round, more and more people dropped off including us.
The crowds were so big we just couldnāt get near or hear to what the guide was showing or talking about.
It was also dangerous in parts, as such a huge crowd couldnāt really safely cross the roads at the same time etc, so it led to confusion and some near misses with cars.
A real shame, and seemed like a waste of £40 for the 4 of us.
It would have been a one star, but the guide did seem enthusiastic and seemed to be passionate about what he did.
Not much use though if we could barely see...

At the beginning of the tour, our guide promised that they would not be condescending. This was completely true! So many ghost tours try to pander to every possible kind of audience by taking unneeded liberties, incorporating unexpected audience interaction, making light of the more gruesome subjects, etc. which does come off as condescending more often than not. The best way to actually appeal to the most people is to simply present the stories as they are, without assumption or cruelty or sensationalization. Of course a fantastic tour guide is necessary for this as well! This is the first ghost tour Iāve been on in any corner of the world that has delivered an experience like this. It felt like we were gathered around a campfire with our guide, rather than being led around by an actor (all love to actors, of course - I am one).
Truly such a special tour. You absolutely must give it a go if youāre in the area looking for something to round...
