I returned recently when one gallery was closed and there was rear access to one gallery at the back. The museum itself is old fashioned in style and layout. I was astonished to find (apparently) the wooden spikes used in pits at the Battle of Bannockburn - put into a case in a corner with otherwise fairly nondescript items. I think this museum has a lot of potential. The garden is delightful and slightly neglected (it was March). The best thing by far here was the quiet courtesy, helpfulness and knowledge of Vincent on reception and the exceptionally welcoming and helpful volunteers. That is why it gets five stars despite the rather tired and dated interior of the gallery I visited on that day. Still plenty of interest though and very much looking forward though to a return visit. I've also been to the pleasant cafe though that was...

The Smith Art Gallery and Museum quickly became one of my favourite places in the city. The first time I visited, I worked my way slowly around, looking carefully at every detail. Then I came back with my summer school students, all of whom were warmly welcomed by the staff at the gallery, and we went off in search of new vocabulary. Finally, I returned but only briefly, because time was short and I wanted to refresh my memory - the pictures and how they are displayed always lift my mood, and I know that coming here will have as much of a positive impact on my day as a good coffee might.

If I could ask for one thing to be added to the museum's offer it would be a simple one-page worksheet or treasure hunt that could be given to visitors (especially those on a school visit) so that they can really make the most of their time in...

This may seem like a small museum for many, but I spent two hours here and could have doubled that time. There is so much history and so many artifacts that are worth viewing. The entry was free, but I recommend dropping a bit into the donation box. This museum is chock full of Scottish history, I loved that the casket (small silver box for letters) belonging to my ancestor, Mary, Queen of Scots, was on display during my visit. The dollhouse was also a big plus for me. The Scottish history, of course, is heartbreaking. The bravery of those who stepped up deserve to have their stories told. The cafe and gift shop are charming. The staff? Just pure Scottish sweetness! If you exit the museum and turn right, you will walk upon a beautiful view of Stirling castle. I definitely recommend visiting...

There is a David Mach exhibition on just now and it is fascinating. Several items all constructed with coloured sewing pins. I only kept the photo of the Queen 's head so I could send it to my son in California. There is also a selection of his books, very interesting and most reasonably priced. Do try and catch it and maybe sample the café. A warm and welcoming coffee shop space. Good selection of breakfast, lunch and cakes. All the beverage choices you could wish for, served by friendly staff. I hadn't time to take in the gallery/exhibitions but I will be back.
