The Star Pyramid is a distinctive and imposing monument located in Stirling, Scotland, near the Old Town Cemetery and below the iconic Stirling Castle. This massive sandstone pyramid was commissioned by local evangelist and nurseryman William Drummond and completed in April 1863.

Its primary purpose is to commemorate "all those who suffered martyrdom in the cause of civil and religious liberty in Scotland." It specifically references the principles of the Reformation and the struggles of the Covenanters, who fought for their religious freedoms.

The pyramid is built upon a stone-stepped base on a shaped grassy mound and is enclosed by wrought iron railings. Each of its faces is adorned with carvings, including references to Biblical texts, and at its base, marble Bibles rest. Significantly, a Bible and the Confession of Faith were sealed into an inner chamber within the pyramid upon its completion, underscoring its religious dedication.

The Star Pyramid, also sometimes referred to as Salem Rock, stands as a solemn and impressive reminder of a tumultuous period in Scottish history. It forms part of the Drummond Pleasure Ground, an area developed by William Drummond, and offers visitors a historical landmark with views of the surrounding area, including the historic Old Town Cemetery. Its unique design and profound historical meaning make it a notable stop for those exploring Stirling's...

You can easily get to this lovely spot on foot from Stirling Castle. As soon as you arrive, you'll see the magnificent pyramid, and it'll take your breath away! There were so many rabbits having the best time chasing each other around!

In 1863, William Drummond asked William Barclay to build the star pyramid. This magnificent pyramid is a heartfelt tribute to all those who bravely gave their lives for the cause of civil and religious liberty in Scotland.

William planted a lovely pleasure garden around the pyramid, complete with trees and plants. He was also kind enough to pay for five of the six statues you can see in various parts of the graveyard. He even donated trees to be planted around the National Wallace Monument!

William Drummond was a land surveyor and nurseryman whose immediate descendants were a well-known family in Stirling. They were responsible for all sorts of activities, both locally...

The Star Pyramid is a striking stone memorial on the boundary between Drummond Pleasure Ground and the Valley Cemetery, on the southeast side of Stirling Castle. The memorial was commissioned by William Drummond and built in 1863 by a local man William Barclay. It is also known as the Martyrs' Monument as it was erected to remember the martyrs of the Scottish Reformation and Covenanting Era. Also known as Salem Rock.

Free to view, the cemetery alongside has interesting headstones and history as well.

The Star Pyramid apparently had 2 bronze eagles on each side of the stairs, but typically they went missing, it is said in the 1970's. Very sad that people would desecrate...

Imposing pyramid, standing as a monument to those who lost their lives in the cause of Scottish civil and religious liberty. The pyramid was commissioned by local evangelist William Drummond, and completed by William Barclay in 1863. It features a sandstone ashlar construction, with marble bibles resting at the foot of each face, referencing biblical texts. The pyramid is situated within a pleasure garden of plants, laid out by Drummond at the edge of the Valley Cemetery. The cemetery is home to a collection of statues also commissioned by Drummond. The area benefits from good views over the surrounding area and is situated just outside the castle grounds.
