Wander among the massive walls of an artillery fort built to protect the Sound of Bressay from the Dutch. Construction of Fort Charlotte began – though was not completed – in 1665, during the Second Dutch War. It was rebuilt more than a century later, during the War of American Independence, but the newer fort never saw military action. Today, the fort is presented much as it would have looked in the 1780s. Nestled in the heart of Lerwick in Shetland is an artillery fort. Though Fort Charlotte is now surrounded by streets and houses, this was once an imposing seaward defence, with a story which dates back to the beginnings of Lerwick as a settlement. Fort Charlotte was the first substantial building in the town and is the only surviving monument in Scotland linked to the Anglo-Dutch Wars fought in the 17th Century.

Fort Charlotte, 179 Commercial St, Lerwick, Shetland ZE1 0HX. Walked by around 9pm one evening and the grounds were still open so went inside for a walk around. Great views of Lerwick and across to Bressay with some good photo opportunities. Although none of the buildings were open we were still able to spend thirty to forty minutes walking around the grounds reading some of the public information posted around the walls and buildings.
