As a fossil hunter and someone very familiar with the story of Mantell, Owen and the dinosaurs, I wasn't sure what to expect when I went to see Dinomania . Maybe a period-drama type production with a realistic, scientific approach set in a dusty museum? I certainly wasn't expecting humour, sporadic swearing, props made of pieces of fabric and male characters portrayed by women. But guess what? It was brilliant! The actors were superb, passionate, and the quirky approach was captivating. It reminded me of another, thought provoking and inspiring theatre experience, when I saw Equus performed by actors with sticks and toy horses, also totally enthralling . Dinomania sped along at a good pace and the emotional crescendo, culminating in the demise of Richard Owen, provided a superb ending. "The Iguanodon has cost me everything!", exclaimed a desolate Gideon Mantell, which for me summed up the whole story in a nutshell. Who said science cannot be portrayed scientifically?
