If you are interested in the history of the Clifton suspension bridge this small museum dedicated to its design is well worth a visit. Well laid out with story boards, information and some interactive areas for adults and children. I was able to learn all about the history and life of designer and engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He was a heavy smoker that smoked up to 40 cigars a day, he also suffered from Brights disease and died from a stroke at 53. Brunel won the Bridge design competition that was open to leading architects and engineers of the day, it was interesting to see some of the other designs that placed 2nd and 3rd. The bridge building was not without its problems, which included running over budget and civil disturbances that caused long delays. Fascinating to learn that these delays meant that most of the original steel suspension cables were used on the Royal Albert Bridge bridge instead. This is the railway bridge that spans the river Tamar, separating Devon and Cornwall, which was completed in 1859. Clifton Suspension Bridge was not completed until 1864 five years after Brunels untimely...
Read moreWe have visited the Clifton Suspension Bridge many times and this year we decided to book a Bridge Tour and we are soo glad that we did. Our tour guide Phillip was wonderful. All tour guides are volunteers and therefore ooze love and enthusiasm for what they do and Phillip was no exception. Very informative, knowledgeable and he showed us brilliant illustrations of all aspects of how the bridge came to be built. He covered incredible 'finds' such as the discovery of the vaults beneath the bridge towers and we learned absolutely fascinating facts about the bridge that we didn't know before. The tour is amazingly free but anyone who loves this bridge enough to book this tour will know that the voluntary donation mentioned when booking is vital to keep the heart and soul of this bridge going and it's worth every singe penny. I whole heartedly urge you to book this tour and you won't be disappointed ... ... ... and no, I am not just saying that and I am in no way connected to the Clifton Bridge ... ... ... I am simply a visitor and think that the tour was brilliant and not...
Read moreI can’t begin to express how wonderful my tour was today. I took my mum for her birthday and sadly, traffic was against us - leading to us being a whopping half an hour late! Of course, our tour group had left. The receptionist did everything possible to ensure we’d still have a chance on the (sadly fully booked) later tour, and the whole team did everything they could to try and make it possible for us to attend. Thankfully, we managed to go on a later tour due to hard work from everyone working here, and had a beyond wonderful time. My mum is the one interested in the bridge, but I found myself facilitated and in awe of the amazing history and views of the vaults! Would give 6/5 if I could for this place and the staff, next level custom service. Our tour guide, Jed, was also fantastic and we learn a lot and had a good laugh. So worth it and such a fantastic day out! Thank you! A MUST...
