Box Hill Stepping Stones: A Delightful Family Adventure The Stepping Stones trail at Box Hill offers a unique and enchanting experience for all ages. This picturesque walk combines stunning natural scenery with the thrill of crossing the River Mole via a series of stepping stones. It's the perfect adventure for families, couples, or anyone seeking a leisurely stroll with a touch of excitement. Highlights: * **Enchanting River Crossing:** The highlight of the trail is the series of 17 stepping stones that allow you to traverse the River Mole. The sense of accomplishment as you hop from stone to stone is truly rewarding. * **Breathtaking Scenery:** As you follow the meandering path along the riverbank, you'll be treated to stunning views of Box Hill's slopes, lush meadows, and the glistening river itself. The changing seasons paint a different picture each time you visit, from vibrant wildflowers in spring to golden hues in autumn. * **Suitable for All Ages:** The trail is relatively short and easy to follow, making it accessible for children and adults of all fitness levels. It's a fantastic opportunity to get the whole family outdoors and active. However, note that there are 275 steps to descend to the stepping stones. * **Abundant Wildlife:** Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse wildlife that calls Box Hill home. You might spot kingfishers, dragonflies, or even squirrels. Tips: * **Check Water Levels:** Before you go, check the National Trust website for updates on the river level. The stepping stones may not be accessible during periods of high water. * **Wear Suitable Footwear:** Choose sturdy shoes or boots with good grip, as the stepping stones can be slippery. * **Bring a Picnic:** Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in one of the designated picnic areas along the trail or at the summit of Box Hill for panoramic views. * **Respect the Environment:** Please follow the Countryside Code and leave no trace of your visit. The Box Hill Stepping Stones trail is a delightful adventure that combines natural beauty, family fun, and a touch of excitement. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking a memorable day out in the Surrey Hills.

I visited Stepping Stones Walk for first time on Saturday. The parking at this specific location is quite small but I managed to get a spot. The price to park wasn’t bad, I paid £4 to stay there for 4 hours but only ended up staying for 3 hours. You do not have to pay an entrance fee. We did walk the incorrect route and had to turn around and go back. This is because the path isn’t clearly marked so a lot of people were making the same mistake. There is a little bridge over a river which is very tranquil and the stepping stones was fun to cross over but this can become congested. You have to wait for others in front of you cross the stepping stones and then give people on the other side a change to cross over too. It’s really nice but can take long as kids love to cross and cross again. I was not in a rush so to me, waiting wasn’t an issue. We decided to take a walk further away from the stepping stones and unbeknownst to me, we were hiking up the mountain. This hike was very nice but was challenging. Definitely not pram or wheelchair accessible and the steep incline was tiresome. Once we reached the top we found out that we had walked to ‘Salomon’s Memorial’. This was a breathtaking view and definitely a must see. There is also parking at this spot which I learned when we got there so lots of moms with smaller kids and prams can visit this areas without having to do the hike from Stepping Stones. We didn’t find any toilets facilities but if we kept walking further up, we may have. There was a lot of people picnicking and enjoying the sunshine. We then made our way back down the mountain and over the stepping stones and back to the car park. I did enjoy it here, perhaps some signs to say how many steps you are going to have to climb would have been nice especially for families with younger children and for the elderly as a warning.

The Stepping Stones Walk in Dorking is a hidden gem for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone looking to escape the bustle of everyday life. Nestled in the heart of the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this walk offers stunning views, tranquil surroundings, and a touch of adventure. The walk starts at the base of Box Hill, one of Surrey’s most iconic natural landmarks. The stepping stones themselves are a charming feature, crossing the River Mole and providing a unique, slightly adventurous way to begin your journey. Be sure to wear suitable footwear, as the stones can sometimes be slippery, especially after rain. As you continue the walk, you'll be treated to lush greenery, ancient woodlands, and open meadows. One of the most rewarding aspects is the climb up Box Hill, where you'll be greeted with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, the views stretch for miles, making the uphill effort entirely worth it. The trail is well-marked and offers various routes for different fitness levels, from shorter, leisurely walks to more challenging hikes. Along the way, you might spot a variety of wildlife, and the peace and quiet make it a perfect spot for birdwatching or simply enjoying nature at its finest. Overall, the Stepping Stones Walk is a must-visit for anyone in the Dorking area. Whether you’re a local or visiting from afar, it’s a peaceful and picturesque way to explore the natural beauty of the Surrey Hills. Just remember to pack a picnic, take your time, and enjoy the serenity of this beautiful walk.
