I truly cannot believe how amazing this place is! If I could give it more than 5 stars I would! It is interesting, reasonably priced and accessible for all. It has amazing disabled facilities including ramps for entrance, a fully functioning disability friendly changing room/toilet with built in changing table that can be raised or lower to the correct height for the user and two disabled wheelchair/pushchairs with large wheels that are available for use on the beach, I love the fact that this is available as there is a significant lack of disability friendly beaches around England so this is an absolute luxury to see! The museum was well priced and the friendly staff, very informative signs, dress up area for the children (which they loved), large boats to look at and a lovely play area for children, where they could climb into the boat, explore and play lifeguards. The café was nicely priced, clean and tasty homemade cakes. This is an amazing place to visit for everybody, if you are in Newbiggin, please visit the Maritime Centre, it...
Read moreCame here with a friend, I'd been recommended to visit a cafe in newbiggin that had big glass windows, right on the beach. I had been given the name, but I'd forgot! Anyway, went to the far end of newbiggin, and couldn't see anywhere that looked like this, so I googled nearby cafes, thankfully, 100 yards away was the maritime centre & I thought, its worth a drive in. So glad, as if this wasn't the place, I can't think of a closer match. The massive windows look straight onto the coastline, and the only thing that spoiled the view was the weather! Staff were friendly and brought our scones, cake & tea over promptly, even gave us a refund on one slice as it had fell into 2 on the plate, it certainly didn't take any flavour away. Scones had been warmed at our request and were lovely, cake was fine, a little on the dry side for my liking, but I like my cake to stick to my teeth! Came to £10.40 before the refund, so £5.10 for a scone, slice of cake and half of a large pot of tea (2.5 cups each), so...

We went to the café initially as we were hungry by the time we got there, our food once ordered was at the perfect temperature, beautifully presented and tasty.
The museum is a treasure trove of information about not only the local history but the lives of the people who have lived in what was initially a fishing village but was to become a fairly major port before the advent of local railways.
Their RNLI exhibit is outstanding and deserves all the donations they get and more.
I will be going back soon to see what has changed (especially after we are clear of the covid restrictions!) And what...
