The beach's character changes with the tide; one day you'll have miles of uninterrupted golden sand, whilst the next you'll be tip toeing over pebbles and shells or clambering through wierd and wonderful rock formations.
If you get peckish on a walk, you can start with a coffee in town (Relish is the perfect spot), wander north and grab a cake in the Rendezvous en route, and finish up with some chips or a doughnut outside St Mary's lighthouse. And repeat it all on the way back :)
Dogs make up half the population in Whitley Bay and whilst the north end of the beach is open all year round, owners are encouraged to keep the south end dog free between April and Sept. This strikes a nice balance for those who prefer to enjoy the beach without being pestered by picnic-stealing dogs like ours!
During summer months when the Sun appears, or during events such as the Kite Festival, it can get very busy. Parking is available at various spots along the coast, but is limited, and most street parking in the area is permit only.

Read moreSince the promanade was refurbished last year, Whitley bay sea front is lovely. And you also have grass fields between the promenade and the road where you can let the dog off the lead, and this time of year (oct-may) you can walk your dog all along the beach too. There's a couple of amusements, a fish and chip take away, a great little ice cream shop, a pizzeria with a soft play upstairs which is fab, a lovely long walk along to St Mary's island and on the way there you get to sit down and rest in the retro rendezvous cafe.
On a warm day or a cold day this place can fill in a good few hours if enjoy a walk.
Also don't forget to visit waves the leisure pool, it's quite pricy but the...
