This monument was erected as a National Memorial to Major General Sir Hector MacDonald KCB DSO ADC. The opening ceremony took place on the 23rd May 1907. The monument was erected by public subscription and stands on Dingwall's Mitchell Hill within a larger cemetery. The monument tower is not open to the general public. One thing, there should be is plaque giving details of the Majors many achievements and why it matters a monument was erected to him.

The legend of Hector the Hero is amazing. Crofter’s son who joined the Gordon Highlander’s as a private and fought his way up to Major General. Was shamed into suicide by contrived allegations from jealous rivals. Had two monuments built to his memory by public subscription and a brilliant commemorative pipe tune.

Situated in Mitchell's Hill cemetery, the Tower is quite impressive. Although closed due to health and safety I am hoping it will be opened again to the public once more. Gorgeous views looking over the Cromarty Firth and surrounding Dingwall.

Hidden gem, when in the town you can just see it peeping out above the trees on the top of a hill. But definitely worth the drive up the steep and turning path to reach.

Beautiful site with great views.

The tower is lovely and the cannons.

Was mindful to be respectful as this is an active grave site.

There is parking on site and...
