I first became away of The Atkinson shortly after the refurbishment. So far I have seen three theatre productions and two concerts in the main auditorium, and been to four concerts held in 'The Bakery', as well as sampled food at 'The Bakery'! Some of the review comments below simply do not represent my experience at this superb venue. Ticket prices are keen, and much lower than those in Manchester (for similar performances) staff have always been more than friendly, and the theatre has always been most top notch (Dracula, Frankenstein, both absolutely excellent) The small scale jazz concerts offer exceptional value, I can't think of a cheaper venue in the entire northwest. And more than anything the venue does it's best to support local arts and artists. It's a large venue, and it deserves your full support.

Took.my daughter there for a couple of hours during our trip to Southport. It's a mix use building run by the Sefton council and houses a museum (small but with surprising contents), art gallery, and also runs theatre shows. We went to the museum bit that was free (they had a special exhibition on the Vikings for which there was a small charge but we didn't have time). It houses various artefacts from Egypt and a mummy (something we didn't expect to find here. You could also learn about the history of the area and much more. It's a good place to look around if you are visiting for longer and perhaps checkout their website to see if there is any shows on so that you could plan ahead. The building itself was gorgeous too.

Went to see the 'I grew up 80's' exhibition and it is a step back in time to the greatest decade of all. Such affection for film, vinyl, gizmo, pac man arcade games, leg warmers and much much more. A great collection that should certainly travel the length and breath of the UK and be shared amongst anyone that was fortunate to grow up then, when life was lived before technology. Take the kids, they will laugh but will appreciate more than ever what they have now. Take the time to read and soak this all in. Truly fab.

My first time at The Atkinson and it is such a lovely venue. The bar was a little expensive, considering I had a rum and coke and a family pack of revels for about £8 (and yet I paid £9 at RA Bar for two spirits and mixer). I went to see Mike Leigh's 'Abigail's Party' and although it had some witty moments, it really wasn't my cuppa tea - I prefer a play with a plot or a twist. I will visit this theatre again someday...perhaps I'll make do with an ice-cream instead. 😄

Went to see The Drifters. Last saw them about 49years ago. Obviously the singers are not the same but a good show. First half was a medley of all the famous hits and each of the group had their turn at centre stage. There was too much fawning in the second half and I felt the energy and top hits they sang from first half should have been saved for after the intermission. Was a good night though and The Atkinson was perfect size. Good atmosphere.

The Atkinson is wonderful - constantly changing exhibitions. The art gallery is very inspiring. We also saw the incredible lancaster aeroplane sculpture and other related artwork which had to be seen to be believed. There is a full programme of lectures and talks - something for everyone - even children. Great museum. Also a lovely cafe which was quite cheap. Also had a nice vibe about it. Apart from a few evening lectures it's all free....
