I think many of us have been captivated by the Channel 5 series of All Creatures Great and Small. My husband and I were avid viewers of the original series too. I have been visiting friends in Thirsk a couple of times a year since 2013 but have never crossed the threshold of The World of James Herriot until the beginning of October this year. (Neither have our friends ever visited!) I usually spurn most themed attractions but after the long and challenging time of lock down it seemed it was time to grab the opportunity whilst in Thirsk once more and visit. So with the latest series of AC in mind my mum n I walked around the corner and entered the World of James Herriot.

We were greeted by a friendly lady who gave us clear directions on the basic route to follow. I have to say what followed was an experience I hope I will repeat. Yes, it's not cheap, especially if doing it as a family, but I honestly felt it was worth every penny. It was so easy to imagine the lives of all those inhabitants during Alf Wight's time there. The little garden is a haven of peace if you visit at a quiet time as we did. Alf's car is there too. You'll see an interesting documentary outlining Alf's early life and career as a vet. If you have time, there is an abundance of material to read, providing an insight into how the writing career of James Herriot got started and why and how he chose that pen name. Watch out for the exhibits of some of the rather gruesome looking tools of Alf's trade. The interactive games are educational and fun.

There is so much more to see and do I could go on. At the end of our tour, the same friendly lady asked if we'd enjoyed it. Mum n I chorused "Wonderful!"

I would say try and visit at a quiet time otherwise it could mar the experience with a lot of people in such a restricted area.

Needless to say, our resident friends are...

The World of James Herriot in Thirsk, Yorkshire, is a delightful and fascinating attraction, perfect for fans of the famous veterinary tales as well as those new to the stories. I recently visited with my elderly mother while on holiday, and we were thoroughly impressed with both the content and accessibility of the site.

The museum is located in the original surgery where James Herriot, the pen name of Alf Wight, worked. It offers a rich collection of memorabilia, artifacts, and exhibits that bring to life the world depicted in his beloved books. From the well-preserved living quarters to the old-fashioned veterinary instruments, there's plenty to see and explore. Interactive displays add an engaging touch, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the history and stories.

One standout feature is the exceptional provision for disabled visitors. The museum is fully equipped with a lift to the first floor, ensuring easy access for those with mobility issues. Additionally, there is a smaller lift to assist with navigating a few stairs, which is a thoughtful touch that makes the entire experience more inclusive. The staff were attentive and accommodating, contributing to a pleasant and stress-free visit.

Overall, the World of James Herriot is a well-curated and accessible attraction that offers a charming glimpse into the life and work of a beloved author and veterinarian. Highly recommended for visitors of all ages...

A wonderful and magical experience for fans of James Herriot!

The World of James Herriot is a small but incredibly rich museum that beautifully captures the life and legacy of the real James Herriot (Alf Wight), his veterinary practice, and the world he wrote about so lovingly. The museum is set in his original home and surgery, offering an authentic and intimate look into his daily life and work.

One of the highlights is seeing the actual set used in the All Creatures Great and Small series, alongside a fascinating collection of vintage veterinary tools and historical displays about the profession. It's a real treat for anyone interested in veterinary history or a fan of the books and shows.

While there is an entry fee, it's absolutely worth it. The museum may be small, but it's packed with charm and nostalgia. If you're a fan of All Creatures Great and Small, this place is magical. The surrounding area of Thirsk is equally lovely – a picturesque Yorkshire market town that adds even more charm to the visit.

Highly recommended for fans and curious...

Anyone going here will no doubt have seen the TV series and read the books, but here you will find the real story behind the people who made it all possible. You can walk through the rooms and discover what life was like for a vet back then, or indeed life in general, and there is an education area upstairs that children would be interested in. During the 90 minutes it took us to look round, almost everything was shown very well and kept us interested, and the phone in the studio is a good touch. I am however not entirely sure how the air raid cellar fits in, apart from it being something that a lot of houses might have had in the 40's, and the manakin of Mrs Pumphrey and Tricki-Woo is totally out of place where it is, and would be better in the set of the TV studio perhaps. The gift shop / ticket office has some interesting bits and pieces which now includes items from "The Yorkshire Vet" of course, but you need to stock some 2XL polo shirts if you want to sell more of them !
