I think many of us have been captivated by the Channel 5 series of All Creatures Great and Small. My husband and I were avid viewers of the original series too. I have been visiting friends in Thirsk a couple of times a year since 2013 but have never crossed the threshold of The World of James Herriot until the beginning of October this year. (Neither have our friends ever visited!) I usually spurn most themed attractions but after the long and challenging time of lock down it seemed it was time to grab the opportunity whilst in Thirsk once more and visit. So with the latest series of AC in mind my mum n I walked around the corner and entered the World of James Herriot.
We were greeted by a friendly lady who gave us clear directions on the basic route to follow. I have to say what followed was an experience I hope I will repeat. Yes, it's not cheap, especially if doing it as a family, but I honestly felt it was worth every penny. It was so easy to imagine the lives of all those inhabitants during Alf Wight's time there. The little garden is a haven of peace if you visit at a quiet time as we did. Alf's car is there too. You'll see an interesting documentary outlining Alf's early life and career as a vet. If you have time, there is an abundance of material to read, providing an insight into how the writing career of James Herriot got started and why and how he chose that pen name. Watch out for the exhibits of some of the rather gruesome looking tools of Alf's trade. The interactive games are educational and fun.
There is so much more to see and do I could go on. At the end of our tour, the same friendly lady asked if we'd enjoyed it. Mum n I chorused "Wonderful!"
I would say try and visit at a quiet time otherwise it could mar the experience with a lot of people in such a restricted area.
Needless to say, our resident friends are...
