EASY TO BOOK, GREAT SERVICE and WONDERFULLY ACCOMMODATING! The entire experience with Midnight Sun Car rental was efficient, thorough and extremely pleasant. Would definitely rent from them again. We used them as part of an Alaskan cruise trip. We arrived in Anchorage a few days early before the cruise, and after a two night stay in Anchorage drove to Seward for the start of the cruise. Yes, there's a drop off charge, but for a family of four it was certainly cheaper than the train and afforded us lots more flexibility. BTW, the Seward Highway drive between Anchorage and Seward is beautiful.
As my husband and I had only rented from the typical big-name car rentals before, we weren't quite sure what to expect with this smaller company. We were very pleasantly surprised by how attentive and customer-service oriented the entire process was. Greg and his team are to be commended; their focus on the customer (and his/her satisfaction) are quite evident. The experience was a refreshing change from our more typical experience of long check-in lines, sales' attempts to up sell, worry over pre-existing cosmetic car damage, and the like at big name car rental companies.
The process at Midnight Sun was easy and pleasant. As our flight was arriving very late (after 1 a.m.), I opted for their valet "Alaska Park" option, which couldn't have been easier (instead of checking in during business hours at their physical location near the airport). While waiting in Seattle for the final leg of our flights, I received an email with a video of our car and contract. Midnight Sun utilizes later model cars (i.e., not one/two year old cars like typical rental companies) and the attached video pointed out any existing scratches/mars (...very minor, btw). I found this very reassuring given the number of car rental horror stories I've read about when people get charged for car damage that they didn't do. Midnight Sun's policy, in contrast, is very upfront and proactive, identifying any cosmetic issues before you get into the car. I signed the contract and emailed it back. After we arrived in Anchorage and picked up our bags, I called the valet number I had been given and we walked outside to a waiting shuttle. Only a few minutes later (5 maybe), we were dropped off at our car. I've got to admit, our "east coast" body clocks were exhausted and this extremely easy and fast option was most appreciated. We were also given an after-hours number to call, should there have been any problems (which there weren't).
Lastly, here's how Midnight Sun wowed me even more, when they solved a problem of my own making. It seems I miscalculated the amount of luggage space we would need for our party of 4 to get to Seward. The next morning, I placed a quick call to Midnight Sun and they upgraded us to a van, at no extra charge. A short drive to their physical location and the problem (again, of my own making) was resolved. BTW, both cars we rented (mid-size SUV and van) were very clean, smooth riding and comfortable. Yes, count me among Midnight Sun's very...
Read moreMy sister & I visited Anchorage for our bucket list trip. I researched car rentals to see if I could get a better deal than what I was quoted & came across Midnight Sun. I did get a great deal & what made it even more awesome was the fact that this is a locally owned agency, that was conveniently located close to our hotel. Talk about a great, seamless process & service. When we arrived into Anchorage, it was close to their closing time. I called the office & spoke with the manager CJ. I told him we were running a little late as I was worried we would miss them, he said not to worry, they would stay open until we arrived. After taking the hotel shuttle from the airport to our hotel, he then arranged our pick up from the hotel to the rental office. It went without a hitch. We did run into an issue with one of the tires during our rental time. I called the after hours number, spoke with Greg, explained the issue we were having, he said it would be taken care of, no problem. He had the car picked up, tire fixed, then ret'd the car back to the train station parking lot. We were able to have this done while we were on our train ride tour to Seward, so there was no gap/problems in our sightseeing schedule. My thanks again to the whole staff, CJ, Greg, Larries & John for the great service. We will definitely be renting again from Midnight Sun for our return trip next year.
Oh, btw, I almost forgot to mention, CJ gave us a list of their employees favorite spots/places around town to eat, for breakfast, lunch & dinner. We tried a few places & all I can say is, their recommendations were spot on!!! Places like AK Alchemist, (their cheese & smoked salmon french fries are so good, we needed to be rolled out of the joint), 49th State Brewing Company (burgers are to die for), & Wild Scoops (ice cream was so good, we had to make a stop, for more ice cream on our way to the airport, when we were leaving Anchorage). These are just a few of the places that's definitely worth the trip & the hype. Local food that's AMAZING & you get lots of it!!!! When you visit Midnight Sun,...
Read moreAs a cynical New Yorker, I repeatedly thought that my interactions with Midnight Sun were too good to be true - it had to be a scam, right? Nope!
I was traveling in Alaska with five other friends and lots of camping gear, so we wanted to get a van that would fit us all for some long days of driving. All of us were under 25, which at most rental companies approximately doubles the cost of a car. To add to that, we wanted several people to be able to drive it, not just a single designated driver. Again, most rental places will charge you for that. Midnight Sun, though, was happy to keep the price the same despite having multiple under-25 drivers. All of that was before getting to Anchorage. When we showed up to pick up the seven-person van we'd reserved, the company offered us a 14-person van instead, which would have a lot more space for our luggage. On top of that, since the 14-person van was a couple years older than the 7-person one we'd initially requested, they offered to give us a substantial discount, which amounted to around 10-20% of the total price for our nine-day trip. We naturally adopted the 14-seater (they'd removed the back two rows for us in advance, since we didn't need the seating, which gave us miles of space for bags), named it Ivan, and drove off as happy campers. We had no problem with Ivan - it drove smoothly and held up fine even on dirt roads and with long days of driving. I also really liked Midnight Sun's approach to pre- and post-rental comparison: they have a representative with an iPad walk around the van taking a video to highlight any issues both before and after, and the renter signs off on both. On the whole this was a professional and extremely pleasant and affordable rental experience. I...
