The Monkey Tree — Attraction in Austin

On the south side of Barton springs from Zilker Park, you have an open area field with the monkey tree, a locally famous pecan tree. On Sundays at the monkey tree there is a drum circle with lots of hippies jamming and flowing.

Hang out at the tree and have a picnic, or go to the free or paid side of Barton springs and have a swim, both are easily accessible from here.

Note: There are occasional homeless / houseless folks around that area, but in that area they don't seem to be aggressive or attempt to intimidate much there versus some other places/cities.

Restrooms: There are public walk-in restrooms on the north and south side. You may want to Google to find them.

Parking: Free for now. This will likely need to be updated soon, the parking here used to be free and recently they have put up meters but I'm of the impression they are not yet utilizing/enforcing them. That said, they probably will be soon. I imagine this will drive out some of the houseless folks as it seems there are a number of people that live in their cars in that parking lot as they used to not charge for parking...

I was fortunate enough that my first experience with the area was on a Sunday, as that is evidently the day for all wayward hippie folk to gather. there's a big-ol' drum circle, artists selling handmade crafts, general merriment abound AND it carried on well into the night. the Monkey Tree is an adventure (sort of), for Austin's cornucopia of counter-culture to share, its own lore a life-force, much like a beacon for wayfarers, daydreamers, stargazers, etc. to congregate (doesn't matter who), and celebrate (doesn't matter what), and in general enjoy good fun with good folks. also: right next to the Barton Springs communal swimming hole, so even if the Tree itself doesn't interest you,...

The most amazing place especially on a Sunday afternoon while topless hippies with hair wild and all over are putting on great drum circle with ATX 's most talented drummer's showcasing a spectacular show for all who dare to join the show! Great for all ages and awesome family fun or couples looking to relax and cudle on a blanket. Either way a guaranteed good time in Zilker ! Be sure to burn some trees with the smell of patchouli and incense ! Hope to see all of the ATX community showing support in this peace and love...
