Minnesota winters keep changing and this is a smart response. The Northland Arboretum in Brainerd Baxter just opened what might be the first manufactured forest ice skating trail in the state. It is a half mile loop through the woods with real hills and curves. This is not a backyard rink. You skate uphill and downhill like skiing on ice. What makes this even better is how it started. A community survey asked locals what they wanted. Forest ice skating showed up. So they bought a used Zamboni at auction and figured it out as they went. That is peak Minnesota energy. This matters because snow is not guaranteed anymore. Ice is more reliable. That could shape how parks plan winter activities going forward especially up north where outdoor recreation drives tourism and local pride. If you are visiting the Brainerd Lakes area this winter this is something different to try. Members skate free. Non members pay ten bucks. Bring your own skates and a helmet. Source: Star Tribune Would you try skating downhill through the woods or is that a hard pass. Hot Tips around the Twin Cities? Need Help Buying or Selling 🏡? 🙋🏻‍♂️DM me or Text📲 Darin 612 702 5126

This is the perfect place to get in a quick hike, or to spend some time outdoors entertaining my kids. As a biologist, the plants and animals are endless. They have fun things like the exercise course, rock hunts, and butterfly garden. There are also 3 gazebos (took me forever to find one of them), a picturesque bridge over a pond, and some other fun gardens. We have taken advantage of the 24 hour bathrooms, and the fee is cheap for non-members. Plus, parking is free to jump on the Paul Bunyan Trail for a bike ride! The ski trails are kept up beautifully in the winter and we had some fun on the haunted trail.

This place is not kept up. Have fun walking through weeds in your journey through the sketchy wilderness! Overpriced, why pay 5 dollars to go in this dump! Fitness trail! More like compost trail! The "fitness" trail offers a "wide" variety of random metal creations that will not help you to get in shape. Please, don't even consider having a wedding on weedy hill. And please, don't waste your money. I did btw just so happen to experience the "maintained gardens." They aren't very maintained. I saw more weeds than flowers. I walked on the other trails that went through the "biomes." I get weeds are a part of nature but at least pick some here and there and allow people to pass without getting hit in the face with a tree branch. I very much thank you for the kind feedback but I will never be coming back unless something changes. Thanks!

Update as of 7/21/21: Today I revisited the Northland Arboretum after 2 years. Although my original review was negative, I would like to say that the Arboretum has improved…somewhat. Although the fitness trail is still not a fitness trail other aspects of the park have improved such as the gardens throughout the trails and the trails themselves. However, it is still not worth the time or money to visit as it is still not a true arboretum. Well done.

Update as of 6/27/25: It’s been a long time since I’ve been to the arb. I will say, it has definitely improved. The staff were friendly, the trails better maintained, and it feels more like a northern arboretum. Still not too sure about the fitness trail. Keep up...

Definitely cute for the haunted thing but with it being an "extreme scare" we were thinking that trail would be more for adults and older teens and a bit more scary but it wasn't scary at all. More cute than scary. Which is okay if we werent expecting an extreme scare. Hopefully some places nearby next year do something for young kids like this and then also a scary version thats actually scary for teens and adults who enjoy the fun! So far we enjoy Molitors best for the scare factor but hopefully with the right reviews they'll have something a bit more like that soon! It'd be smart since molitors is one of the only few bigger scare...
