I lived here for 3 years. Many reasons I give it 2 stars and many reasons I’d give it 1 star.
Some of the good things about the standard is the location. If you want to walk to campus you can and if you have to travel to Leon or take a bus to Walmart you can as well because there is a bus stop out front. But that comes at a price. And I think you’re getting the bare minimum for the price that you’ll have to pay.
My time was about 12.5k/year maybe even more. They have a wide amount of amenities that are just not enough, the pool is small and uneventful, the hot tub is often warm and not working. The study pods/area would be so nice to use if their alarm system didn’t scream the highest pitch possible in the evenings/nights. So loud that AirPod pros with sound cancellation and max volume cannot drown out. Their events that they hold are very bland, uneventful, and no one really attended. The social life there is not great either. If I saw the front desk workers in the halls or outside of work they wouldn’t say hi. Even during work they would almost avoid talking to me, even when I was walking to the desk with my mother. They would do food events and leave the food out starting at 10am or noon and leave it out for hours which seems like it should be a health violation. Unless you knew someone there no one would really talk to each other and you couldn’t always do the events due to time problems with work or school that the attendance was spotty. They use 3rd party wifi that is difficult to communicate with and puts up a real time commitment to set everything up, I had a roommate who just used data because it was too much of a hassle. They would enact weird rules like having to walk your friends to and from your apartment or you were susceptible to fines -I understand that was in case of damage- but it makes young adults feel less respected and more monitored like children.
Personally, I think the staff was rude, avoidant, and nonchalant when discussing questions or in greeting. The standard at boone, being a mega-corporation with landmark properties will ring you of your money, because realistically, that’s all you are to them. Some of the amenities like the pool area and the “climbing” rock are cheap space fillers that don’t offer a lot of to it other than more selling points. The study areas are quick to fill during exam periods and if the staff are not working being filled with an alarm that puts me at anger during my study.
The standard also loves not fixing the public entrances, like the elevator room doors that require a key, which personally I enjoyed because being in groceries through a door that will stay unlocked for 1.5 seconds before relocking is extremely aggravating. But when they aren’t fixed it is awesome. The hallway decor (paint) and atmosphere is equivalent to a mental hospital in a tv show. They love to crack down hard and do not allow much resistance if you think there should be. During inspections and routine checkups like cleaning the water heater and dryer vents, they leave the dust and lint everywhere, meaning when you come home it is to a mess that you must clean up. Dust! Dust everywhere as there are no dust filters in the air vents. The air is disgusting and I hate that I had to breathe it everyday. The furniture is awful and if you stay long term they do not replace with modern equivalents. I had an pleather couch that had been there before I lived there. Replacing/repairing appliances can be a hassle as it will take 4+ visits of the maintenance team and even more emails with proof and complaints. (Love to the maintenance team - Lori is the best woman ever and she is the nicest person. She will make an effort to get to know you and be a friend)
My one gripe while writing this - after 3 years of living there. Normal wear and tear is non excusable. For their cheap prison matress that I laid on everynight for 3 years (and who knows who else for how long before me) had a 4 inch long stretch mark (not really a tear but the fabric was worn) runs me an extra $150 - threatening...
Read moreIf I could leave 0 stars I would. This is the absolute WORST place in boone to live. Everything in my apartment has broken due to how cheaply it was made then they MAKE RESIDENTS PAY FOR IT! I do mean everything, from the windows in my apartment to the washing machine everything has broken. The common areas (hallways, elevators, parking garage) are always filthy, you will see anything and everything out there (vomit (there is a section of one wall near the outdoor area in first floor of A building that has been there over 8 months, since September)pee(both human and animal), beer, blood, black marks all over the walls, milkshakes that will sit for weeks, etc). They also removed all side entrances which for students is the worst after walking back from a hard class. The doors themselves are always broken so that even residents can’t get into the building, which makes people have to “yank” the doors open just to go home, then surprise they get mad at residents. I guess they expect you to live on the street while they try to fix it (which never happens). The door leading from the parking deck to the leasing office has literally been broken all year and they haven’t even looked at it. On top of all of this, If you are a PAYING resident who PAYS to park here, the gates are literally always broken and now ON TOP of all that they will put irremovable stickers on your windows even when you park where you are supposed to. By supposed I mean how even though I pay every month to live there and every month to park there, yes it is not included with their outrageous rent, I can no longer park on the floor which I live on. The first floor is now only for “paying customers”, well I pay every month unlike most people. What about those who live on the first floor, I guess we don’t matter. This may seem minor but try walking down five flights of stairs with groceries, you will have to do this considering the elevators are also ALWAYS broken. They have literally fallen with people inside of them so often they have instructions on what to do inside. As for the first floor of the parking deck they say it’s for their “retail store parking” but the stores haven’t come in in over 2 years. It’s just sitting empty and probably will stay that way. Also the power in the parking decks is broken at minimum once a month which makes navigating through it very difficult and on top of that. If someone hits your car in the parking deck they essentially say “sorry fix it yourself”. The maintenance and front desk people are great. It is whoever is coming up with these absurd ideas (make residents pay for their mistakes and ruin their cars windows!!!!). They also do not care about your personal privacy, I have had someone walk into my room without knocking while I was changing. There was someone who sadly committed suicide and the standard tried to hide that fact for a week without telling anyone. If you’re a student don’t even bother looking here because the WiFi NEVER works so you won’t be able to get any work done unless you have a personal hotspot, which will cost you even more money! So unless you can afford to pay around 800 JUST to live decently with everything around you falling to pieces, quite literally, then live somewhere else, the standard is NOT worth it. They give no regard to the well being of their residents. I make sure to tell everyone I know to never even consider living here. Hopefully this will reach some poor souls before they sign their lease. If you never for the rest of your life listen to something some random guy tells you, listen to this DO NOT LIVE AT THE STANDARD I PROMISE YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!! I will never do business with this company ever again. AWFUL experience! P.S. they advertise that they have a pool but that is untrue (the picture in their description is false advertisement. That pool does not exist here (and neither does the all wood interior area they advertise) . They have two broken hot tubs (this review was written in May and they have been broken since approximately...
Read moreAggregated feedback from multiple tenants, including my own, at The Standard brings attention to specific concerns:
(EDIT Response to owner: I’d like to clarify that the concerns highlighted in my review has little to do with personal feelings but rather shared observations and experiences reported by multiple tenants. I feel that is clear. Addressing these specific issues would contribute to fostering a more positive living environment for the entire community.)
• Inconsistent Move-in Conditions: Some tenants reported units being inadequately cleaned upon move-in, suggesting a lack of consistent maintenance standards. • Disputed Move-Out Charges: Despite meticulous documentation and cleaning efforts during move-out, tenants encountered prolonged disputes over charges, undermining transparency in financial transactions. • Unwarranted Noise Complaints: Introverted individuals faced baseless noise complaints, resulting in unexpected fees and showcasing a potential lack of understanding in the management’s assessment of tenant behavior. • Protracted Dispute Resolution: Move-out disputes, supported by thorough photographic evidence, were unnecessarily prolonged, casting doubt on the efficiency of the dispute resolution process. • Communication Challenges with Manager Traci: Attempts to resolve issues through email communication with the manager, Traci, were reportedly met with ineffectiveness, hindering open dialogue between tenants and management. • Threats of Collections: Disputes often escalated to threats of collections, causing unwarranted stress for ex-tenants and creating an adversarial dynamic between ex-residents and management. • Misleading Communication: Some tenants reported situations where critical emails, particularly those related to dispute resolution or important communications, were allegedly denied by the management. Notably, there was a case where management erroneously claimed that damaged flooring caused by burst pipes during the winter had been fixed in an email. However, the floors were not repaired until a week later, bringing attention to concerns about transparency and accountability within the management. • Privacy Concerns and Lying about Entry Notices: Privacy concerns were heightened when instances of unauthorized entries into apartments occurred without proper notice. Tenants reported that, when questioned, management lied about sending notices after entering. This breach of trust raises serious questions about the respect for tenant privacy and adherence to established protocols for apartment access. • Maintenance Delays: A year-long wait for hot tub repair indicated prolonged maintenance delays, negatively impacting residents’ amenities and overall satisfaction. • Early Re-leasing Pressure and Rent Increases: Tenants reported feeling pressured to commit to early re-leasing, with 20% rent increases implemented after two months for those who didn’t re-lease and planned to live there another year. • Alleged Unethical Business Practices and Crooked Fees: Claims of unethical business practices, including questionable fees, were voiced by multiple tenants, raising concerns about the company’s integrity. • Claims of Employee Manipulation: Allegations of employees being asked to write fake 5-star reviews were made, potentially compromising the authenticity of the company’s online reputation. • Incidents of Aggressive Management Behavior: Reports of aggressive behavior from management during interactions with tenants highlighted potential professionalism and customer...
