I went on a date this past weekend… Ok first of all, dating as a 36 year old woman who doesn’t have a home base because she’s been traveling the world for the past 12 years and has now temporarily moved back into her parent’s house in her small ass country town to start a new career while everyone around her is telling her she’s crazy, is a WHOLE other story… More on that some other time…. Back to the date. We went to Boston for the weekend and he took me to the aquarium which was super cute. No one has ever taken me on a nice day date like that before. (How sad is that? I know 😕) I was very grateful and excited to be going. But internally I was freaking out. We all hate that “and this one time at band camp…” girl. But what happens when you are THAT GIRL?! With every sea creature that swam by in its enclosed tank, all I kept wanting to say was…”this one time in the Galapagos, I swam with like 50-100 hammerhead and black tips sharks!” Or talk about the time I saw penguins in Melbourne Or released baby sea turtles-not once but several times in Guatemala. Or how I’ve snorkeled with giant 6 ft sea turtles in multiple countries. Or seen an Anaconda in the Amazon. But I felt like a spoiled brat. And like it would come across like I was bragging and showing off and ungrateful because obviously seeing them up close in person is a completely different experience to seeing them in a man made aquarium. I found myself biting my tongue, totally aware of how it could sound if I said it all out loud even if my intention was not to brag, but to share about my life. And for me, having lived this unconventional life for so many years, those crazy bucket list moments have become my norm. After sharing only a fraction of my encounters with marine life around the world, he looked at me and said, “man, it must be really hard going back to a normal life after all of that.” AND IT IS! I think it might be similar to how military personnel struggle to return to life as a civilian. Things are never really the same once you’ve experienced life differently. And only those who get it, really get it. So share this if you get it and let me know if you can relate!
