I am trying to be nice about this- I initially gave this one star then changed it to two and have been very generous in giving it three but this is a big warning message please read! Be very careful of the vodka, I have bartended for 20 years and had every kind of vodka tasted under the sun- the venue is nice and music was great, staff was errr grumpy and seemed to hate being there at best. But I had a horrible reaction to the vodka, along with two other friends (we all broke out into hives the following day) but I had the worst reaction even tho I only had two drinks during the whole concert, but I broke out in hives head to toe and had to go to the hospital the next day and receive an epi shot- along with many other medications.... never been allergic to ANYTHING in my life, doctors said it was very clearly an alcohol allergy and One of the dermatologists said it was absolutely a vodka allergy and due to either high sulfites (meaning the vodka wasn’t prepared correctly/aged properly or distilled right from the factory) or it was cheap vodka that was sprayed with chemicals. Either way I know it’s more on the vodka company then the venue- but they need to be aware that the batch of vodka from the zz ward concert is a major health hazard- I hope they will contact the distributors or wherever they bought the Vodka- I was surprised when I saw the bartender pour the drink because I didn’t even recognize the brand and thought that very odd as I have bartended all over the country for 20 years and use to do tastings for many different distributors. I get wanting to make a buck but I hope this was just a mishap of ordering and not a conscious decision (I can’t imagine anyone wanting to make a buck that bad) to buy such cheap harmful alcohol. But again great music and cute venue- the staff seems like they hate their jobs and that’s a shame lol but I had a great time regardless until I was laying in the hospital bed the next day haha.... again I’m not solely blaming the venue- but it is extremely concerning- and at 7$ a drink unknown cheap vodka could probably be bumped at least to something recognizable- heck I don’t care if it’s Popov or some other super cheap thing, but whatever you have ordered (not sure the name as again I have NEVER seen that brand or label before which should have been a warning for me I guess?) needs to be sent back- because if I didn’t go to hospital when I did I would have gone into shock from the allergic reaction- could have killed someone. Scary- seriously! :( but again I know NO one that works behind a bar would want to knowingly serve a bad batch of booze to any of their customers no matter how much they hated their job lol... but I do hope the management contacts their distributor and lets them know something is very very wrong.... before something horrible to someone not as nice as me has another reaction. I did hear the hospital had a few cases of hives come in- but I’m not sure if they went to the fox theatre or a different place and or even drank the same vodka. Whole thing has been insane to say the least- but I still think the venue is fun and intimate. But maybe some staff upgrades and a switch to literally any other vodka than what they are using haha would...
Read moreDo not recommend this venue if you are going with only women. I attended this venue to see a Kpop concert with my teenage sister tonight. There were drug addicts all around the area, which isn't the venue's fault. But what is in their control is having security outside the venue to keep the guests who are coming to your place safe. Considering this was a Kpop concert most of the attendees were young women. There was one specific man who was on meth who kept walking up and down the street talking to the women standing in front of this venue, including me and my sister, making everyone very uncomfortable. The volunteers who were outside with us the whole time were also young women, so no one who was able to stop this guy. He didn't speak to anyone when there were men outside might I add. There were multiple security guards showing up for their shift during this entire time and coming outside of the venue to pick up food they ordered but not one person stayed outside to ensure the safety of these young women attending this concert. when they were finally "notified" to send security out this man had been playing with a pocket knife dragging it up and down his chest and they didn't ask this man to leave and when the man walked away so did the security. the man came back and was playing with a lighter and lighting paper on fire and security still did nothing. my sister and I have never felt so unsafe in broad daylight considering there was a way to prevent this. He was also right outside the doors when the concert let out still with no security. it is sad to say that we were safer attending a...
Read moreThis is almost an ideal venue, as far as I'm concerned. It's size is small enough to give a sense of intimacy but large enough to attract some really great musicians. I've been frequenting it since high school and have seen many, many shows here, and I've never really experienced bad sound. The space has good energy and the musicians tend to create great music.
As I've gotten older, the acts that come through are less appealing than they once were, and I do find the college-heavy crowd to become a bit tiresome at times, but it's The Hill, so what do you expect?
Benches along the walls provide a place to rest, but the mostly open, multi-level floor provides many different perspectives--both audibly and visually.
I have generally had good interactions with the staff--they are pretty short at first, but if it's not too busy, you can generally chat a bit and subtly make the point that you're not young and stupid. I have seen them be unjustifiably rude to a few customers and I've seen them kick out people who were minding their own business (possibly they got confused about the identity of some people who got rowdy...).
I have only good things to report about my interactions with the management--one time they let me in to see a band I was very excited about even though I wasn't 21 and it was a 21+ show (albeit with big X's on my hands and sincere promises not to try to get a drink).
Really...
