The dumplings here at Nana's on the Hill in Boulder right next to the old Tulagi's are like little pillows of perfection.
After ordering, you are greeted by a stunning oversized painted wall mural by Casey Kawaguchi and a little viewing window you can even peek right into the kitchen watch them make the dumplings fresh daily by hand, where they carefully weigh the ingredients to ensure they are just right each time and never burst.
The result is perfectly moist and spongy dumplings and buns including their super fluffy and tasty Signature Bao as well as the Pan Fried dumplings.
My favorite was the 6pc pork Xiao Long Bao, or soup dumplings which are eaten by carefully placing your spoon underneath to savor any soup that may spill out as you bite into them. They come out in a bamboo steamer and are sure to impress.
I fell in love with soup dumplings when I lived in NYC and frequented Joe's Ginger both Chinatown and midtown. They are hard to find in Colorado outside of Aurora. I've also traveled throughout Asia including China, Japan and Thailand so I've been to authentic dumpling restaurants to compare.
Nana's egg drop soup is a very generous portion and the perfect comfort food. I also went out on a limb and ordered something I've never tried before, the beef pancake roll which includes some lettuce and cucumber for a nice little crunch. Definitely something I'd order again for lunch especially as the weather gets warmer.
My friend ordered the Szechuan Chicken which has a bit of a kick for those who like it spicy. The portions were good and the meat never dry.
The boba milk tea comes in a sturdy, generous takeaway container and was perfectly cooked tapioca pearls and not too chewy like some other places can be. The waiter said they don't use any artificial ingredients which I appreciate. They also have a few other flavors to choose from.
Rumor has it Nana's is run in part by the same family (a brother of one of) the former Five Spice owners, which makes sense because I used to order the best Chinese from their 30th St. location probably twice a month at least (ok maybe once a week if I'm being honest).
I noticed they have another location in Denver on Tejon that even has honey chicken feet and truffle soup dumplings on the menu. I might have to make a...
Read moreI never leave reviews at restaurants because overall my experience is never so negative as to be forced to share with others. However, after eating the food produced here, I have an entirely new life philosophy. Possibly because I was on the toilet for so long throwing up whatever fake, microwave chicken they delivered that I thought I was on the verge of death and partially because no impact I could ever have on this restaurant could ever come close to how much their rubber which they endearingly call food ruined my whole weekend. Before ordering, I was optimistic as I love Chinese food specifically fried rice. No matter where I go I always order fried rice and on the app, it looked fantastic. On arrival, its dull, lifeless color compared to what I viewed on the app should have alerted me to what I was about to experience. However, I was hungry and hadn't eaten in about 12 hours so I told myself I'd try it anyways and as long as it wasn't inedible l'd trek through. This dish at the price of $19.20(!!!!!!!!!) while not inedible was possibly as close as you can get to that while still counting as "food" ". But like I said I was very, very hungry so I struggled through. While finishing the dish wasn't so difficult the hours after was when the dish really showed its true colors. (Sorry in advance for the graphic diction displayed in the following sentences. In the span of 5 hours I had puked 15 times and had major bowel movements upwards of 30. Not only had this dish been rejected by my body, but it also alienated every other piece of food I had in the 1-2 days leading up. While the puke was not a fun experience, at least I could say it tasted better coming up than going down because it had mixed with all the other actually appetizing meals I had in the previous days. Even days later, my stomach still feels the sting from this abomination of a restaurant. Overall, this "restaurant" deserves something less than a 1/5(Probably closer to a -5/5, as far in the other direction as you can possibly go) and I'm sure I'll get some fake Al written response apologizing. Maybe they'll even offer me a gift card, butit would find its way to the sewers quicker than everything else that i received from them. PLEASE DO NOT RISK YOUR LIFE GOING TO THIS...
Read moreI had an extremely uncomfortable experience at this location last week. My three friends and I arrived at 8:15 PM - 45 minutes before the posted closing time of 9 PM. As we walked in, we saw a male employee with long hair in a ponytail mopping the floor. I work in customer service myself, so I understand that end of day cleaning often starts early when business slows down. However, it's common courtesy to pause those tasks when customers enter and resume after they leave.
From the moment we walked in, this employee seemed visibly annoyed by our presence, making us feel unwelcome and awkward. He informed us that the kitchen would be closing at 8:30 PM. To be respectful of their time, I chose to order takeout instead of dining in, especially since we saw others coming in and out for pick-up as well.
While we waited at the front of the restaurant (it was cold and raining outside), the same employee resumed mopping, this time moving directly toward us. He mopped right up to our feet, literally within a centimeter, forcing us to step aside so he could clean where we were standing. It felt passive-aggressive and extremely inconsiderate.
I’ve never encountered such a lack of basic courtesy from someone in a customer facing role. Everyone has off days, but if working with the public is that frustrating, perhaps it's not the right job. It's unfortunate because the food, especially the dumplings, are genuinely good but behavior like this really detracts from the overall experience and disrespects the effort of those working hard in...
