I went to Bowie Playhouse to see the play Crowns. The playhouse is at the end of White Marsh Park Drive tucked in the woods. It reminds me of a community playhouse. The sitting area is intimate and holds a couple hundred people. The stage is immediately in front of you and comparable to an elementary or middle school stage.
The play was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed the acting, stage sets were adequate (it's not Broadway) and were made up of hat boxes, hat racks , etc that were important to telling the story of Crowns.
The play is a musical that celebrates the black church and the role of different head coverings worn to church prior, during, and after the civil rights movement. It was a great way to spend 90 minutes, and the Bowie Playhouse was a quaint and intimate venue to...
Read moreWe came to see "Sound of Music". We (my daughter, Granddaughter and myself) were seated in the front row. My granddaughter was trying to sing to the music and dancing in her mother's arms. She was enjoying the show and having a good time. We were asked to move to the back of the theater at intermission. My granddaughter was making too much noise. There were other children making noise who were older than my granddaughter, making as much as she did. We felt very unwelcome, so we left. She was upset because she wanted see the rest of the show. The staff was very rude, unkind, snotty and unwelcoming. The parking is far from the theater and it is hard to find the theater. We will never go to the Bowie Playhouse again. It was a...
Read moreThis is an absolutely fantastic theater venue! They're surrounded by beautiful woods, and the theater itself is one of the few community theater spaces in the DMV area that is able to house full sized backdrops and fly rigging. The shows do vary in quality depending on the budget of the theater group performing there, but I've always enjoyed the shows. The musicals are especially good since they have the set up for full cast microphones and good acoustics. There is always plenty of parking too, which is nice. The only bummer is that there aren't very many good places to eat or get drinks nearby before/after a show, at least as far as I know. There are a lot of chain places, but nothing...
