A few months back, the Brookfield store added a scent machine which spews out chemical fragrance. It can be smelled from the parking lot before you even enter the door. This toxic machine creates a barrier for those with allergies, asthma or sensitive to chemicals. Asthma and allergies are covered under the ADA. Why is Goodwill discriminating against those with a disability? Is there some monetary gain to them adding this to the store? Is that monetary gain more important than the effects of this chemical fragrance on customers and employees. It would not surprise me if the employees hate it also and complain of headaches but get told that they will get used to the smell. I wonder if the employees know that an allergy to this fragrance is most likely covered under the ADA and headaches possibly covered by workman’s comp? A quick google search brings up many articles and medical studies on the toxic effects of these type of “air fresheners”. Due to a legal loophole, the companies that make these type of products do not have to reveal what type of chemicals are used in the “fragrance”. Why does Goodwill not care about the health of their customers and employees? Why should customers and employees have to inhale these chemicals in order to shop or work there? Does the person who made the decision to install these air fresheners in the stores have one in their office at headquarters? I doubt they would want to breath that stuff in all day but have no problem forcing employees and customers to. If an air quality test was taken at this location, what would it reveal? Will Goodwill remove these willingly? An email response from Goodwill regarding a complaint was: “Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns with us. We understand that our scent system will prohibit you from shopping in our stores. Your complaint has been recorded and will be referred to as we continually look to improve our operation. As an alternative, please consider shopping with Goodwill online”

Thought I got a good deal on a simple toy just to find out it was broken once I got home. You can imagine the disappointment. Other than that the store was full of stuff.

Dangerous enviroment for people or kids with asthma, autoimmune conditions, chemical fragrance immune responses(30 percent of the population having this disability disregarded by this store). They have installed a fragrance machine that fogs into the store creating a setting of dangerous VOCS. The smell was too overwhelming to bare, even with 2 masks on setting me into a dangerous flare that lasted a week to recover from. If you want your nervous system to be assaulted by neurotoxins this is the place for you.

Support fragrance free to reduce indoor pollution and to support 1/3rd of the population with these disabilities. Our lives matter. Our nervous and immune system matter especially in these times.

Edit- The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) regulators are lobbied by the very same companies that want their products to pass as safe. The power of money can label any product safe as long as pockets are filled. Thus your statement is a lie since those products are "deemed safe" by no real regulation.

A well known company thats known for lobbying their products safety is febreeze. So i would not be suprised if this is the same giant pushing their product into stores and buisnesses.

Febreeze is known for having 1,4- Dichlorobenzene which is linked to lung damage, is a known carcinogen, and it is an E.P.A. registered pesticide. Aswell as containing BHT (neurotoxin, endocrine disruptor, immunotoxicity) , Acetaldehyde (immunotoxin) , 1,3-Dichloro-2-propanol – Carcinogenic (causes cancer) , Ethyl acetate (reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, organic system toxicity and and skin, eyes and lung irritator), Benzaldehyde (neurotoxin) , Linalool (immunotoxin), Methyl pyrrolidone (Toxin to reproduction and development) , Butylphenyl methylpropion al (immunotoxin) , Hexyl (immunotoxin and skin, eyes and lung irritator) Just to name only a few

There is very poor regulation for products here in america due to chemical corp lobbying and owning regulation. To somehow try justify the use because other establishments use the same product is no excuse for those other stores and places for discriminating against the sickest people in the country. People deserve to be able to walk into a store or stay at a hotel etc.

On another note the chemicals from the stores fragrance machine contaminates every item in the store. Then people bring those chemicals back to their animals, children, and family.

A country with buisnesses that don't support the safety of their customers. I will not be the last person injured by this chain of establishments. Make better choices for your future customers and customers with asthma or ther autoimmune conditions...

I am deeply disturbed by the incident I recently learned about at this location. A queer couple was harassed by other customers using hateful, homophobic slurs—including the F-slur—and instead of addressing the hate speech, the staff chose to reprimand the victim for reacting to the abuse.

This wasn’t just poor customer service. This was an alarming example of enabling bigotry. When someone is verbally attacked and threatened—especially with slurs that have historically been used to dehumanize and endanger LGBTQ+ people—it is the responsibility of staff to step in and protect the safety and dignity of everyone, not just appease whoever is yelling the loudest.

By turning a blind eye to hate and directing blame toward those targeted, this store sent a very clear message: that queer people are not safe here, and that their presence is seen as the problem—not the bigotry directed at them. That is unacceptable.

I hope Goodwill takes this seriously. Your stores should be a safe, inclusive space for all people. This incident deserves more than silence.

⸝

If you care about creating safe and inclusive public spaces, speak up. Hold businesses like Goodwill accountable when they allow hate speech to go unchecked. Discrimination doesn’t just happen in private—it happens in public places, while employees look the other way. That silence is complicity.

Contact this store. Ask what steps they’re taking to train their staff in handling harassment and supporting LGBTQ+ customers. Demand better. Queer people deserve to feel safe while shopping, working, and simply existing—without being met with slurs, threats, or...
