Gateway Arts isn't all that is cracked up to be. From my experience at first it was this grand non-profit place for the disabled was like a haven, you got learn and interact with other people, sometimes go on field trips and make your art and sell. But the staff take the employees way too much for granted and confidentiality is skeptical.
From my experience being here my art has gotten the respect it deserves and is now enclosed in a shelf with any chances of being sold, some of my pieces have been damaged at some point, the staff often tend to play "undercover" and authorize things without much of the consult from a few of the artists (like myself). I mean the staff and case managers are very nice, but some if not all are deceitful and show some lack of care for the artists. Lot of times when I visit they either leave for vacation or they're half the time unorganized. One of my pieces had been promoted, which gave me a 75.00 bonus, but this was temporary, and to where I thought I'd gain profit for the selling piece, I receive no money in return. Gateways I think is a place that somewhat shatters dreams, but also makes some come true (but it is very little) and only to places that are affiliated with this organization. So I don't coming to Gateway anytime soon unless they clean...
Read moreThis is a great place to pick up some unique art for a fantastic price. The gallery shows the work of over 100 different artists with disabilities. Surrounding the gallery are studios where the artists produce the actual work sold in the gallery. The store manager is extremely knowledgeable about each artist’s biography and the works take on an even greater value once you learn a bit about the person who produced it. They carry everything from fine art to jewelry to textiles, folk art, ceramics, clothing and many other handmade items. Half of the sales price goes directly to the artist. It’s a fun shop to stop in when you are...
Read moreMy recent experience at gateway was a pleasant one. What a great idea to have an organization that helps the handicap through art.
As an artist myself, I can appreciate what is achieved here.
My husband and I ended up purchasing 2 scarves and 4 pieces of art.
A truly unique and amazing shopping experience. The best part is getting a card with a picture and a little bit about the artist who made the piece you purchased. That makes it so much...
