I've visited the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site many times, each visit enriching my appreciation for one of America's most dynamic presidents. This site, nestled in Buffalo, New York, marks where Theodore Roosevelt was swiftly inaugurated in 1901 following the tragic assassination of President McKinley. It's a place steeped in history, housed within the beautifully preserved Ansley Wilcox House, where Roosevelt took the oath of office.
The museum does a fantastic job with its exhibits. They paint a vivid picture of the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, the somber circumstances of McKinley's assassination, and Roosevelt's consequential presidency. Interactive displays and authentic artifacts from the period really bring the early 20th century to life, making history accessible and engaging for all ages.
Most recently, I had the honor of attending our Vistage meeting at the site, where we were treated to a tour led by Spencer, the new director. His knowledge and passion for the site were evident, making our experience both educational and enjoyable. It’s heartwarming to see such dedication, which ensures that every visitor leaves with a deeper understanding of Roosevelt’s impact on our nation.
The site also holds a special place in my heart because of my father’s long-standing involvement. He was on the board for many years and played a pivotal role in the preservation efforts, including overseeing the construction and rebuild of the original carriage house. His efforts also extended to commissioning the sculpture of Theodore Roosevelt that now graces the front lawn, adding a personal connection to our visits.
Overall, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site is more than just a museum; it's a gateway to the past, preserved with care and presented with enthusiasm. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Roosevelt and the ongoing efforts to keep history alive for future...
Read moreThis place was really enjoyable for the history buffs and museum enthusiasts alike. It is the original house where the oath of office was taken, and where the president worked from for the first few weeks of office.
The staff are well informed, helpful, and very pleasant. There are only guided tours available so make sure to call in advance to reserve a space.
There are many original artifacts, as well as many new points about his legacy and original plans as president. There is new information you may not know and I would highly recommend it for families looking to enjoy learning about modern politics and how it all got started.
There are not a lot of breakable items, so it is kid friendly, but the material may not be of the same interest to a small child. However, they also show a few videos and presentations throughout the tour which are sure to entertain.
It is a great piece of Americana, and a must see for anyone in the area.
As a side note, they also have a beautiful room upstairs for hosting private events. This would be a great opportunity for either very discreet functions, birthday parties, or small weddings as there's a good amount of space.
Also, there is free parking in the back which is a great addition for people coming from...

Most of the house is restored as accurately as possible and their are some actual artifacts from the inauguration in the house. The site also gives a brief history of the Pan-American Exposition that was held in Buffalo in 1901. It was at this exposition where President William McKinley was assassinated allowing for Theodore Roosevelt to become President. Some artifacts from the expo are shown. The second floor of the house has a few exhibits about the history of the house and an interactive recreation of TR's presidential office. A nice park that does a great job describing the story of how TR's presidency got started and incorporates much regional history. The tour guide was great and the staff was friendly. The gift shop was fairly priced and sold many items related to the history of the city of...
